As of Aug 21, 2026, the average hourly pay for robotic surgery in the United States is $28.24, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $22.12 and $32.93 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is robotic surgery?

Robotic surgery is a minimally invasive surgical technique where surgeons use a computer-controlled robot to assist in performing complex procedures with enhanced precision, flexibility, and control. The most common system, such as the da Vinci Surgical System, translates the surgeon’s hand movements into smaller, exact movements of tiny instruments inside the patient’s body. This technology is commonly used in procedures like urology, gynecology, and general surgery, leading to smaller incisions, less pain, and quicker recovery times for patients. While robotic surgery offers many benefits, it is important to note that a trained surgeon is always in control of the robotic system during the procedure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in robotic surgery, and why are they important?

To thrive in Robotic Surgery, you need advanced surgical expertise, strong anatomical knowledge, and typically board certification in a surgical specialty. Familiarity with robotic surgical platforms such as the da Vinci Surgical System and completion of specialized robotic surgery training are essential. Excellent hand-eye coordination, adaptability, and effective communication skills help surgeons work precisely and lead operating room teams. These competencies are crucial for ensuring patient safety, optimizing surgical outcomes, and advancing minimally invasive procedures.

How do professionals in robotic surgery typically collaborate with surgical teams during procedures?

In robotic surgery, professionals such as surgeons, surgical assistants, and scrub nurses work closely together to ensure patient safety and procedural success. The surgeon operates the robotic system from a console, while the rest of the team manages patient positioning, instrument changes, and troubleshooting in the operating room. Effective communication and coordination are essential, as the team must anticipate the needs of the surgeon and respond quickly to any changes during the procedure. This collaborative environment fosters skill development and often provides opportunities for team members to learn new technologies and techniques.

What is the difference between Robotic Surgery vs Surgical Technologist?

AspectRobotic SurgerySurgical Technologist
Required CredentialsMedical degree, surgical training, certification in robotic surgeryPost-secondary education, certification as surgical technologist
Work EnvironmentHospitals, surgical centers, operating rooms with robotic systemsOperating rooms assisting during surgeries
Industry UsageUsed by surgeons to perform minimally invasive proceduresSupports surgical teams by preparing and handling instruments

Robotic Surgery involves surgeons using robotic systems to perform minimally invasive procedures, requiring medical degrees and specialized training. Surgical Technologists assist in the operating room by preparing instruments and supporting surgical teams. While both roles are integral to surgical procedures, Robotic Surgery is performed by licensed surgeons utilizing advanced technology, whereas Surgical Technologists focus on supporting the surgical process without performing the surgery themselves.
