What is a robotic process automation job?

Robotic process automation (RPA) is the technical design or training of a software robot or artificial intelligence (AI) entity to code, develop, configure, and test software, often to replace individual software developers. The responsibilities of an RPA professional may be to consult with businesses or clients to develop process automation procedures. There are also technical design jobs where duties are to write code to create an AI or software robot that can perform automated processes or tasks, such as working in a scripting language to create components for a larger programming job. Qualifications often include a bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, statistics, engineering, or a closely related field as well as experience.

What is robotic process automation?

Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is a technology that uses software robots, or 'bots,' to automate repetitive and rule-based tasks traditionally performed by humans. RPA systems can interact with digital systems and applications to process transactions, manipulate data, trigger responses, and communicate with other systems. This automation helps organizations increase efficiency, reduce errors, and free up human workers for more complex responsibilities. RPA is widely used in industries like finance, healthcare, and customer service to streamline operations and cut costs.

How does a robotic process automation specialist typically interact with business stakeholders and IT teams during an RPA project?

As an RPA specialist, you will regularly collaborate with business stakeholders to understand their workflows and identify automation opportunities. You'll also work closely with IT teams to ensure that automation solutions are secure, scalable, and comply with company standards. Effective communication skills are essential, as you'll need to translate technical possibilities into business value, gather feedback, and coordinate testing and deployment. This collaborative environment helps ensure that RPA solutions genuinely address business needs and are smoothly integrated into existing systems.

Headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, our over 50,000 employees around the globe take on complex challenges to discover and deliver life-changing medicines, strengthen how health is understood and managed, and support the communities we serve. This is hard, urgent, selfless work-but it's work worth doing. If you're driven by purpose and ready to bring your best to work that truly matters for patients, we invite you to join us.

This role sits at the intersection of finance and technology, supporting the modernization of financial planning, forecasting, and reporting within the Business Intelligence Group Center of Excellence (BIG-COE). The Associate Director will contribute to digital transformation initiatives leveraging SAP S/4HANA, SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC), and Microsoft Fabric to enhance agility, accuracy, and strategic value across finance operations.

This position is accountable for generating strategic insights, enhancing internal capabilities in resource allocation, identifying growth drivers, and supporting channel prioritization efforts. The role requires close partnership with global finance as well as regional and sub-regional teams to deliver effective business solutions and address capability gaps through the implementation of advanced planning and reporting tools that promote a data-driven culture within the PFR function. A strong financial background in the pharmaceutical industry is essential to provide meaningful input to business discussions and decision-making processes.

Location: Indianapolis Corporate Center

Reports to: Executive Director, Business Intelligence COE and Global Master Data Management

Key Responsibilities

Consulting and Advisory

  • Support the execution of a forward-looking digital strategy for global PFR processes aligned with enterprise-wide finance transformation goals

  • Analyze and understand business needs, translating them into technical requirements and effective BI and planning solutions

  • Evaluate and pilot emerging technologies including AI/ML, APIs, intelligent automation, and data lakes

  • Contribute to enterprise initiatives such as automated forecasting, simplified planning, data integrity, self-service reporting, financial dashboarding, and FX impact analysis

Technology Enablement

  • Support solution design for finance transformation initiatives, helping integrate scalable solutions across SAP S/4HANA, BW/4HANA, (SAC) SAP Analytics Cloud, and Microsoft Fabric to enable intelligent automation, real-time analytics, and seamless data orchestration

  • Partner with internal teams to achieve finance transformation goals and provide consultation on financial planning scenarios, what-if simulations, and FX-currency risk analysis

  • Resolve issues proactively and escalate appropriately when broader intervention is required; champion efficient approaches to achieving business outcomes

  • Serve as a subject matter resource on PFR processes and practices, providing guidance on financial data governance and ensuring integrity and usability of analytics across the ecosystem

  • Contribute to project planning including scope definition, deliverables, success metrics, schedules, and resource allocation in alignment with business objectives

  • Collaborate with Technology at Lilly, Advanced Analytics, and Data Architecture teams to ensure technical alignment and support

  • Enhance working expertise in SAP S/4HANA, SAC, and Microsoft Fabric to support platform adoption and integration

People Leadership

  • Lead and develop a team of 3-5 direct reports, providing coaching, performance feedback, and career development support

  • Foster an inclusive team environment that encourages innovation, accountability, and continuous learning

  • Ensure team alignment with organizational priorities and transformation objectives

  • Establish clear roles, responsibilities, and delivery cadences to ensure the team operates with discipline and accountability - driving outcomes through others rather than individual contribution

  • Build team capability in SAC tools, data storytelling, and agile delivery practices through structured onboarding, stretch assignments, and deliberate skill development planning

Process Transformation & Automation

  • Support redesigning legacy processes using RPA, workflow engines, Power BI, and SAC

  • Contribute to real-time data integration, intelligent reconciliation, and analytics dashboard development

  • Promote a culture of innovation and continuous improvement within the team

  • Implement best practices for process optimization and automation to reduce operational risk

Collaboration & Change Management

  • Partner with stakeholders across finance to align digital initiatives with business priorities

  • Support change management efforts including training, adoption, and operational readiness

  • Foster cross-functional collaboration and knowledge sharing across global, regional, and sub-regional teams

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Information Systems, or related field with equivalent work experience

  • 5 + years of experience in Planning, Forecasting & Reporting

  • Prior experience leading, managing, or supervising a team, including responsibility for performance management and staff development
