As of Sep 11, 2026, the average yearly pay for robot reliability engineer in the United States is $117,973.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $102,500.00 and $129,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a robot reliability engineer?

Robot Reliability Engineers are professionals who focus on ensuring that robotic systems function consistently, safely, and efficiently over time. They analyze data, perform tests, and implement maintenance strategies to minimize downtime and extend the lifespan of robots in industrial or commercial environments. Their work is crucial for identifying potential failures, optimizing performance, and ensuring that robots meet operational and safety standards. These engineers typically collaborate with design, manufacturing, and maintenance teams to resolve issues and continuously improve robotic systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a robot reliability engineer?

To thrive as a Robot Reliability Engineer, you need expertise in robotics engineering, mechanical and electrical systems, and a strong background in reliability analysis, typically supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with root cause analysis tools, reliability modeling software (such as Weibull analysis), and programming languages like Python or C++ is common, along with certifications like Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE). Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and addressing complex technical issues. These skills ensure robots operate efficiently with minimal downtime, directly impacting productivity and safety in automated environments.

What are the most common challenges faced by robot reliability engineers, and how can they be addressed on the job?

Robot Reliability Engineers often encounter challenges such as diagnosing intermittent failures, ensuring consistent uptime in automated systems, and addressing wear-and-tear or unexpected faults. These issues require strong analytical skills to interpret data from sensors and logs, as well as effective collaboration with maintenance teams, software developers, and production staff. Proactive maintenance strategies, thorough root cause analysis, and continuous process improvement are essential to overcoming these challenges and ensuring long-term system reliability.

What is the difference between Robot Reliability Engineer vs Robot Maintenance Technician?

AspectRobot Reliability EngineerRobot Maintenance Technician
CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering or related field, certifications in robotics or reliabilityTechnical diploma or associate degree, certifications in robotics maintenance
Work EnvironmentDesign, analysis, and optimization of robot systems in manufacturing or industrial settingsPerforming routine repairs and troubleshooting on robotic equipment
Employer & IndustryManufacturing plants, automation companies, industrial facilitiesFactories, production lines, robotics service providers

The Robot Reliability Engineer focuses on ensuring the long-term performance and reliability of robotic systems through analysis and design improvements. In contrast, the Robot Maintenance Technician handles routine repairs and troubleshooting to keep robots operational. Both roles are essential in industrial automation but differ in scope and responsibilities.

Key responsibilities

  • Own the reliability strategy, test roadmap, and reliability growth plan for robot hardware and integrated systems.

  • Design and implement diagnostic tests, stress tests, accelerated life tests, and validation procedures to expose real-world failure modes.

  • Lead failure analysis and incorporate test results, field data, repairs, and failures into engineering and manufacturing design decisions.

Job description

Position Summary:
We're seeking a Reliability & Test Engineer to define and drive the reliability strategy for our robots from early design through production and field deployment. This role is ideal for a senior hands-on roboticist who is passionate about making reliability a first-class design principle, not a reactive failure response. You will work across mechanical, electrical, firmware, controls, manufacturing, and operations teams to identify risks early, implement diagnostic and validation strategies, and drive design improvements through strong feedback loops.
Core Responsibilities:
  • Own the reliability strategy, test roadmap, and reliability growth plan for robot hardware and integrated systems.
  • Ensure reliability is built into subsystem and system-level designs from architecture and design review through production release.
  • Define reliability requirements, metrics, test coverage, acceptance criteria, and release readiness standards.
  • Design and implement diagnostic tests, stress tests, accelerated life tests, and validation procedures that expose real-world failure modes.
  • Partner with firmware and controls teams to define telemetry, health signals, fault detection, and diagnostic infrastructure for monitoring degradation and failures.
  • Lead failure analysis and build feedback loops from test results, field data, repairs, and failures into engineering and manufacturing design decisions.

Required Qualifications:
  • 8+ years of experience in robotics, reliability engineering, test engineering, hardware validation, or complex electromechanical systems.
  • Strong hands-on experience testing, debugging, and validating integrated mechanical, electrical, firmware, and controls-based systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to define reliability strategy, metrics, validation plans, and design feedback loops for complex hardware products.
  • Experience designing practical tests that uncover real-world failure modes and generate actionable engineering data.
  • Experience working with sensors, actuators, power systems, embedded systems, logs, telemetry, diagnostics, or health monitoring tools.
  • Strong systems thinking, failure analysis, technical leadership, communication, and cross-functional influence skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with robotic systems, ideally humanoid or custom manipulation robots.
  • Experience with HALT/HASS, accelerated life testing, environmental testing, FMEA, or reliability growth programs.
