What are some typical challenges faced by road engineers during a project, and how are they addressed?

Road engineers often encounter challenges such as working with varying soil conditions, managing unexpected weather delays, and coordinating with multiple stakeholders like contractors, government agencies, and utility companies. Addressing these issues requires strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and effective communication. Road engineers regularly conduct site assessments, collaborate with surveyors and construction teams, and adjust project plans to ensure safety standards and deadlines are met. Being proactive and maintaining clear communication channels are key to successfully overcoming these challenges.

What are road engineers?

Road engineers are professionals who design, plan, construct, and maintain roads, highways, and other transportation infrastructure. They ensure that roads are safe, efficient, and durable, taking into account factors like traffic flow, environmental impact, and local regulations. Road engineers work closely with surveyors, construction teams, and government agencies throughout the lifecycle of a road project. Their expertise helps create transportation networks that support economic growth and public safety.

What is the difference between Road Engineer vs Civil Engineer?

Position Overview

This is a strong opportunity for a Florida-licensed roadway engineer who wants to focus on municipal roadway and community infrastructure projects rather than large-scale DOT highway work. As a Senior Roadway Engineer, you will lead the design and delivery of local transportation improvements including complete streets, streetscapes, roadway widening, resurfacing, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, intersections, roundabouts, traffic signal coordination, and other municipal roadway projects.

This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys practical, community-focused design where the impact is visible at the local level. Candidates coming from FDOT, DOT consultant, or highway design backgrounds may be a strong fit if they are interested in pivoting toward smaller-scope municipal projects with more direct client interaction, local agency coordination, and hands-on project ownership. The E3, E4, or E5 level will be determined based on experience, technical leadership, project responsibility, and ability to lead complex roadway assignments.

Core Responsibilities

  • Lead municipal roadway engineering projects from planning and conceptual design through final design and construction support
  • Perform roadway design tasks including horizontal and vertical alignments, typical sections, grading, drainage coordination, erosion control planning, quantity calculations, cost estimating, and plan production
  • Prepare construction plans, technical details, specifications, cost estimates, reports, and engineering calculations
  • Review design drawings, technical specifications, and construction documents for accuracy, quality, and regulatory compliance
  • Serve as Engineer of Record when applicable, overseeing construction administration, RFIs, submittals, and field coordination
  • Coordinate with clients, engineers, technical staff, project managers, contractors, subconsultants, and multidisciplinary teams
  • Partner with Project Managers and Senior Engineers to assess risks, develop solutions, and resolve complex project challenges
  • Develop project action plans, assign resources, track progress, and support timely, efficient project delivery
  • Prepare and present project updates, progress reports, technical recommendations, and design alternatives to senior management and stakeholders
  • Research design alternatives and provide practical technical recommendations based on project goals, local standards, budget, and constructability
  • Ensure engineering designs meet client standards, local agency criteria, Florida Greenbook requirements, MUTCD standards, and organizational quality benchmarks
  • Conduct engineering investigations, data analysis, feasibility studies, site visits, and construction observations
  • Support Marketing and Business Development pursuits by preparing technical approaches, conceptual layouts, RFP/RFQ responses, and participating in presentations
  • Maintain and expand professional expertise through workshops, industry publications, professional organizations, and networking opportunities
  • Share innovative solutions and best practices across project teams to improve efficiency and support continuous improvement

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or related engineering discipline
  • Licensure: Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Florida required
  • Experience: 10+ years of relevant roadway, transportation, civil engineering, consulting, or public agency experience
  • Technical Expertise: Strong knowledge of roadway design, transportation engineering principles, project management, and industry standards
  • Municipal Focus: Experience with local agency, municipal roadway, community infrastructure, or smaller-scope transportation improvement projects preferred
  • Standards Knowledge: Strong understanding of Florida Greenbook, MUTCD, local agency standards, and current roadway design and construction practices
  • Software: Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Project, and Outlook
  • Project Tools: Familiarity with Deltek VantagePoint, Smartsheet, or similar project management platforms
  • Design Tools: Familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D and/or OpenRoads Designer preferred
  • Leadership: Proven ability to lead, motivate, and inspire technical teams
  • Project Management: Ability to manage multiple tasks while maintaining project schedules, budgets, quality standards, and client expectations
  • Communication: Strong technical writing, presentation, coordination, and client-facing communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Level Alignment: E3, E4, or E5 designation based on experience, project complexity, and leadership scope
  • Transferable Transportation Experience: FDOT, DOT consultant, or highway design experience is valuable, but candidates should be interested in transitioning toward municipal roadway and community-focused transportation projects
  • Municipal Experience: Experience working with local municipalities, counties, public agencies, or community transportation programs
  • Project Types: Experience with complete streets, streetscapes, roadway widening, resurfacing, intersections, roundabouts, signal coordination, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, or multimodal improvements
  • Construction Administration: Experience reviewing RFIs, submittals, field reports, contractor questions, and construction-phase documentation
  • Business Development: Experience supporting proposals, technical approaches, project interviews, client presentations, and pursuit strategy
  • Team Development: Experience mentoring junior engineers, designers, and technical staff
  • Design Software: Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D, OpenRoads Designer, or related roadway design platforms

Compensation & Leveling

  • E3 Band: Typically aligned with experienced roadway engineers developing into stronger technical and project leadership responsibilities
  • E4 Band: Typically aligned with senior engineers managing more complex design assignments, project coordination, and technical deliverables
  • E5 Band: Typically aligned with highly experienced roadway engineers who bring deeper technical leadership, client coordination, and project ownership
  • Base Salary: $85,000 – $144,000+ annually, depending on experience, licensure, technical depth, and leadership responsibility
  • Sign-On Bonus: Up to $10,000 for qualified candidates
  • Benefits: Comprehensive medical, dental, vision, life, disability, 401(k), paid time off, paid holidays, paid parental leave, and professional development support
