What are RN side jobs?

RN side jobs refer to part-time or flexible work opportunities that registered nurses (RNs) can take on in addition to their main nursing positions. These jobs can include per diem nursing shifts, telehealth positions, health coaching, medical writing, or working as a vaccination nurse. Many nurses pursue side jobs to earn extra income, gain new skills, or explore different areas of healthcare. Such roles often offer flexible hours and can sometimes be done remotely.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an RN side?

To thrive as an RN Side, you need a nursing degree, RN licensure, and strong clinical skills in patient care and safety monitoring. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, bedside monitoring equipment, and hospital protocols is essential. Attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for this position. These competencies ensure patient safety, compliance with healthcare standards, and efficient collaboration within the care team.

How do RNs on the side team typically balance multiple patient care priorities during a shift?

RNs working on the side (or float) team often care for patients in different units, requiring them to quickly adapt to varying protocols and patient needs. A key challenge is managing time effectively while prioritizing tasks such as medication administration, patient assessments, and documentation. Strong communication and organizational skills help RNs coordinate with permanent staff, ensure continuity of care, and respond to changing patient conditions efficiently. This role offers diverse clinical experience and can help nurses build adaptability and broaden their skillset.

What is the difference between Rn Side vs Lpn Side?

AspectRn SideLpn Side
CredentialsRegistered Nurse (RN) licenseLicensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license
Work EnvironmentHospitals, clinics, home healthLong-term care, nursing homes, clinics
Job ResponsibilitiesAssessments, care planning, complex proceduresBasic patient care, routine procedures
Employer & Industry UsageWidely used in hospitals and acute careCommon in long-term care and outpatient settings

While both Rn Side and Lpn Side involve patient care, RNs typically handle more complex assessments and procedures due to their advanced training. LPNs focus on routine care and assisting RNs. The choice depends on the work environment and level of responsibility required.

How can an RN make extra money?

Registered nurses (RNs) can earn extra income by taking on per diem or agency shifts, providing private-duty nursing, or offering health education and consulting services. They can also leverage specialized skills such as IV therapy or wound care to find additional opportunities outside their regular schedule.
