What is an RN CST?

RN CSTs are Registered Nurses (RNs) who are also Certified Surgical Technologists (CSTs). These professionals have dual certifications, allowing them to provide patient care both as nurses and as surgical technologists in the operating room. They assist surgeons during procedures, help prepare operating rooms, and ensure patient safety before, during, and after surgery. Having both qualifications makes RN CSTs highly versatile and valuable members of the surgical team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an RN CST?

To thrive as a Registered Nurse Certified Surgical Technologist (RN CST), you need a nursing degree, active RN license, and CST certification, along with strong knowledge of surgical procedures and sterile techniques. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), surgical instruments, and operating room protocols is essential. Attention to detail, teamwork, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are critical soft skills in this role. These qualifications and skills ensure patient safety, efficient surgical operations, and effective collaboration with the surgical team.

How does an RN CST typically collaborate with other members of the surgical team during procedures?

An RN CST works closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other surgical staff to ensure that each procedure runs smoothly and safely. They are responsible for preparing the operating room, passing instruments to the surgeon, maintaining a sterile field, and anticipating the needs of the team during surgery. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as the RN CST must coordinate with circulating nurses and other specialists to respond quickly to any changes. This role often requires adaptability and a strong understanding of both nursing and surgical technology practices.
