This higher level of education can open up more career opportunities and is often preferred by employers.

AspectRn BsnLpn/Lvn
CredentialsBachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or RN licenseLicensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) license
Work EnvironmentHospitals, clinics, community health, and outpatient settingsLong-term care, nursing homes, clinics, and home health

What does an RN BSN do?

An RN BSN is a Registered Nurse who has earned a bachelor’s of science degree in nursing and passed the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN). As an RN BSN, you are in a position to work toward leadership roles at a hospital, clinic, nursing home, doctor’s office, or other healthcare settings. You also have the option of working in neuroscience, critical care, geriatric medicine, mental health, midwifery, or one of many other fields of specialty. Their duties are largely the same as a Registered Nurse—providing care to patients and seeing to their health needs—but because of the more advanced level of education obtained, RN BSNs are often preferred by employers over RNs who have earned associates degrees in nursing and are paid more.

What can I do with my registered nurse bachelor of science in nursing?

A registered nurse with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) can work in various healthcare settings such as hospitals, clinics, and community health organizations. They can pursue roles including bedside nurse, nurse educator, case manager, or healthcare administrator, often requiring licensure and clinical experience. The BSN also provides a foundation for advanced education and specialization in fields like nurse practitioner or nurse anesthetist.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an RN BSN, and why are they important?

To thrive as an RN BSN, you need advanced clinical knowledge, critical thinking abilities, and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree with active RN licensure. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), patient care technologies, and compliance with healthcare standards like HIPAA are typically required. Outstanding interpersonal skills, leadership, and the ability to educate patients and mentor peers help distinguish top performers. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering safe, evidence-based care and advancing within complex healthcare environments.

How much can a BSN registered nurse make?

A BSN-educated registered nurse typically earns between $60,000 and $90,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and work setting. Salaries can increase with specialization, certifications, and advanced roles such as nurse manager or clinical nurse specialist.

How do RN BSNs typically collaborate with interdisciplinary teams in a hospital setting?

RNs with a BSN often play a key role in interdisciplinary teams by coordinating patient care with physicians, therapists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals. They are responsible for communicating patient needs, participating in care planning meetings, and ensuring that treatment plans are followed accurately. This collaboration helps improve patient outcomes and fosters a supportive work environment. Strong teamwork and communication skills are essential, as RNs with a BSN are often seen as leaders within these groups due to their expanded education and training.
