Engineering Lab Manager - SMT Production - Assembly - Lab & RMA

Title: Engineering Lab Manager Location: Roanoke, VA Salary: $100,000 - $140,000 (Dependent on Experience)

We are seeking a hands-on, working Engineering Lab Manager to own and operate our engineering lab and warehouse environments in Roanoke, VA area.

Directly support Hardware Engineering and QA teams across an active multi-product roadmap, keeping our testing, validation, and fulfillment workflows running seamlessly.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lab & Warehouse Operations: Oversee day-to-day operations of the Engineering Lab and Warehouse/RMA Center. Maintain, calibrate, and organize lab equipment, 3D printers, thermal chambers, and customer-site replication testing walls.

  • Engineering & QA Support: Serve as the primary resource for prototype builds, validation testing, and DVT/PVT activities. Build and maintain test fixtures, jigs, and cable assemblies from engineering schematics.

  • Testing & Failure Analysis: Perform functional testing, failure analysis, and defect documentation. Operate internal SMT prototype lines and coordinate with quick-turn vendors.

  • RMA & Inventory Control: Manage the warehouse RMA workflow (receive, test, diagnose, and disposition returned equipment). Oversee initial incoming product inspection and production firmware flashing operations.

  • Project Coordination: Plan workloads across concurrent projects, track the status of builds and test campaigns, and proactively communicate schedule risks to engineering leadership.


Must-Have Qualifications

  • Education: Associate or Bachelor degree in Electronics Technology, Electrical Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent hands-on experience).

  • Experience: 5+ years working in an electronics lab, embedded test, or hardware engineering environment.

  • Technical Skills: Solid understanding of electronic schematics and PCB design basics.

  • Equipment Mastery: Hands-on experience with standard lab equipment, including oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, power supplies, thermal chambers, and logic analyzers.

  • Testing Capability: Proven experience with functional testing of embedded hardware and firmware products.

  • Professional Habits: Self-motivated with exceptional organizational, documentation, and priority-management skills.


Preferred Skills (Nice to Have)

  • Experience with IoT or energy management hardware products.

  • Familiarity with firmware flashing tools and production programming workflows.

  • Proficiency with SMT rework and prototype assembly.

  • Experience with RMA processing, test fixture design, or EOL test systems.

  • Prior experience mentoring or leading a small technical team.
