Journey Meter Worker
Beginning Tuesday, June 2, 20262, Riviera Utilities will begin taking applications to fill a job vacancy for Journey Meter Worker. We are considering applicants with qualifications in the following range, salary commensurate with education and experience.
Journey Meter Worker

Education and Experience:
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimum of 3–5 years of utility meter testing and installation.
• Experience operating bucket trucks and working from elevated positions required.
• Valid driver’s license required; CDL preferred or ability to obtain.
• Ability to obtain and maintain any required utility certifications or training.

Preferred Qualifications
• Knowledge of meter data systems, AMI/AMR systems, or advanced metering infrastructure.
• CPR and first aid certification preferred.
• Experience with CT metering, three-phase services, and services exceeding 400 amps required.

Licenses or Certifications:
Journeyman Gas Fitters Certification.
Complete Advanced Meter Certification Program, Substation Maintenance Program Unit III/labs, Certification for Bucket Truck Rescue required if assigned to the Meter Maintenance Team, RNI and SmartWorks Software Certification.

Special Requirements:
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Driver’s License within 60 days of employment.

Journey Meter Worker
Department: Administration - Meter

JOB SUMMARY
This is an expert technical position responsible for reading various utility meters, working delinquent accounts, including collecting payments and/or terminating service, setting, and removing meters, turning utilities off and on, testing and installing various meters, and programming self-contained, bolt-in, and instrument rated meters. This position delegates daily duties to Meter Department personnel and works under the supervision of Meter Supervisor/Assistant Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
• Assists with collecting delinquent accounts, including collecting payments and/or terminating services.
• Assists with turning on gas services and lighting-up appliances, where applicable.
• Assists with customer questions and work order distribution.
• Assists with training of less experienced employees.
• Tests all electric meters.
• Programs and installs self-contained and instrument-rated meters.
• Install, maintain, test, troubleshoot, and repair meters and metering equipment for residential, commercial, and industrial customers.
• Read and interpret electrical blueprints, service diagrams, meter schematics, and utility specifications. Perform meter change-outs, upgrades, inspections, and reconnect/disconnect services.
• Operate bucket trucks and related utility equipment safely and efficiently while performing overhead and elevated metering work.
• Troubleshoot metering discrepancies, service issues, load problems, and customer complaints.
• Conduct meter testing and verification to ensure accurate utility billing and compliance with utility standards.
• Assist with meter investigations involving tampering, damaged equipment, outages, or unsafe conditions.
• Coordinate with engineering, line crews, customer service personnel, contractors, and utility inspectors regarding metering installations and service requirements.
• Perform field inspections to ensure compliance with National Electrical Code (NEC), utility specifications, and safety regulations.
• Maintain accurate records of installations, repairs, inspections, service orders, and inventory usage.
• Support utility metering systems associated with electric, gas, wastewater, and related utility infrastructure as assigned.
• Respond to emergency calls, outages, after-hours service requests, and storm restoration activities as required.
• Maintain tools, equipment, vehicles, and work areas in a clean and safe condition.
• Train and mentor apprentice meter workers or other utility personnel as needed.

Other Functions:
• Performs standby duty on a rotational basis; available to reset meters for service at odd hours, on the weekend, and holidays.
• Performs other related duties as required/assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Thorough knowledge of single-phase and three-phase electrical systems.
• Extensive knowledge of CT metering installations and services over 400 amps.
• Knowledge of instrument-rated metering, transformer wiring, and meter testing procedures.
• Ability to build CT metering assemblies and install associated service equipment.
• Ability to safely operate bucket trucks and elevated utility equipment.
• Knowledge of OSHA safety standards, electrical safety procedures, and utility operating practices.
• Ability to interpret electrical drawings, blueprints, schematics, and service specifications.
• Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills related to utility metering systems.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Ability to communicate professionally with customers, contractors, and coworkers.
• Ability to perform physically demanding work in various weather and field conditions.
• Ability to read maps to find service addresses and collect payments.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure, as well as estimate quantities.
• Ability to work alone, or in a group with one or more people, and to follow through on work assignments.
• Ability to operate a personal computer to enter meter history and other customer data.
• Ability to keep accurate and careful records of information. This includes the ability to type information into a computer and to write legibly to complete work orders.
• Ability to communicate orally with customers and fellow employees in a courteous and efficient manner. Includes the ability to speak in a clear voice using appropriate pauses, emphasis, and pronunciation and to listen for understanding.
• Ability to walk or drive a truck over an established meter route to take readings of meters, etc.
• Ability to read small print and figures on tickets, meters, dials, etc.
• Ability to climb, crawl, reach, and extend arms in order to set, remove and read meters of various heights safely.
• Ability to hear, read, and understand English instructions, rules, policies, forms, etc.
• Ability to operate and repair small/light equipment, such as power tools.
• Ability to operate medium equipment and machinery, such as vehicles and bucket trucks.
• Ability to have regular and predictable work attendance.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is medium: exerting up to fifty pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to thirty pounds of force frequently, and/or up to ten pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following required physical abilities:
• Balancing: sufficient to maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
• Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull equipment weighing up to 75 pounds.
• Ability to climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and work in confined spaces.
• Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
• Ability to work from bucket trucks and elevated positions for extended periods.
• Ability to respond to emergency situations and work extended hours when necessary.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment is outside in all kinds of weather and in field environments with exposure to electrical hazards, traffic, weather conditions, and confined spaces, spending 75% or more time outside. Position may require overtime, standby rotation, weekend work, and emergency response duties.
