Job description

About Rivian

Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.

As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.

Role Summary

The Senior Electrical Safety Integration Engineer leads the development, execution, and integration of vehicle-level electrical safety strategies necessary to achieve high levels of vehicle safety. Based on-site in Irvine, CA, this role owns crash-response architecture, high-voltage isolation, post-crash electrical behavior, system-level requirements, validation, homologation support, and launch readiness.

The individual in this position collaborates closely with Vehicle Safety Engineering, Homologation, Electrical Energy Storage, Electric Power Conversion, Electrical Hardware, Packaging, Structural Safety, and Software teams to define crash reaction strategies, mitigate safety risks, track program milestones, and validate system performance in crash scenarios through virtual simulations and physical testing.

Responsibilities
  • Work autonomously to define, develop, and execute testing strategies for both HV and LV electrical systems, with a focus on crash reaction and safety performance.
  • Own of the crash testing and validation process for electrical safety, from early-stage simulation and requirements analysis to component testing, full-vehicle crash testing, and launch.
  • Lead complex vehicle-level anomaly investigations using crash data, vehicle diagnostics, log analysis, CAN traces, and network behavior to drive effective corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with Electrical Energy Storage, Electric Power Conversion, Electrical Hardware, Packaging, Software, Structural Safety, and Homologation teams to build comprehensive electrical safety strategies.

  • Influence and collaborate with senior leadership to resolve complex technical trade-offs, align electrical safety strategies, and drive organizational safety goals.

  • Track program milestones, manage project risks, and coordinate deliverables across departments to ensure high-quality execution on time and within budget.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.

  • 7 to 10+ years of experience in automotive electrical safety, vehicle integration, battery systems, crash testing, or post-crash failure analysis.

  • Must be based hybrid/on-site at the Irvine, CA facility.

  • Deep technical expertise in HV and LV systems, Battery Management Systems (BMS), HVIL, high-voltage contactors, isolation monitoring, pyro-fuse systems, CAN communication, and diagnostic log analysis.

  • Strong working knowledge of automotive safety standards and regulations, including FMVSS 305, FMVSS, ECE/UNECE regulations, ISO 26262, IIHS, Euro NCAP, and U.S. NCAP.

  • Proven project management experience with expertise in tracking milestones, managing project risks, establishing requirements traceability, and coordinating cross-functional teams.

  • Ability and willingness to travel to component testing labs, vehicle testing grounds, and manufacturing launch locations.

Personal Attributes:

  • Leadership & Drive: High-level leadership capabilities with a proven track record of guiding large-scale, complex projects to deliver high-quality results on time and within budget.

  • Autonomy & Ownership: Highly self-motivated and proactive, with the ability to independently drive projects, balance competing priorities, and make decisions that impact broader organizational goals.

  • Problem-Solving & Risk Management: Excellent analytical skills to identify and address critical electrical safety issues, anticipating roadblocks to keep high-level objectives on track.

  • Clarity & Communication: Influential communicator who translates dense technical complexities into understandable concepts, navigating tough discussions to align engineering teams, senior leadership, and external stakeholders around safety goals.

  • Adaptability & Resilience: Able to pivot quickly in response to changing priorities and program challenges while maintaining focus on overall program delivery.

  • Confidence & Collaboration: A self-assured team player who assertively represents team interests, manages external relationships constructively, and builds strong partnerships across multidisciplinary departments.
