Job description

POSITION: Assistant Manager

CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt, Full-Time

REPORTS TO: Cafe Manager


Position Summary

We seek an enthusiastic, confident leader to assist in managing Verve's bustling café and further develop our highly talented crew. Join us in continuously raising the bar on the coffee and culinary experience. Live with Verve!


Key Responsibilities

  • Welcome and connect with every customer every time by being a brand ambassador with positivity and enthusiasm

  • Assist in overseeing daily café operations, including opening and closing procedures

  • Communicate effectively with customers, team members, and upper management

  • Assist in inventory management and ordering supplies as needed

  • Collaborate with the Manager to develop and implement strategies for business growth

  • Consistently provide quality beverages and food

  • Have a clear knowledge on all inventory items and accurately communicate product information to customers by responding to questions, orders, and concerns

  • Assist in maintain a clean environment including the cleaning of the back of house, bar areas, and patios to contribute to a healthy environment for customers and employees

  • Contribute to store profitability by following Verve’s cash handling and cash register protocols

  • Work at different stations in the café as needed and assigned

  • Work in collaboration with the Training department in the Santa Cruz Region (10-20% of total time)

  • Conduct lab trainings, shadow shifts, coffee education and seasonal roll outs (whole bean, food and drinks) as directed by the Regional Manager or Training Department

  • Train and mentor team members to uphold high standards of customer service, beverage execution and seasonal drink and food roll outs.

  • Ensure fluency in all menu items, whole bean offerings & operations.

  • Conduct store-specific training topics on workflow, efficiency, teamwork & communication

  • Dial in recipes for monthly pour over program

  • Conduct QC checks on espresso, mod bar, keg system and batch brewer

  • Facilitate in-store tastings of all new whole bean offerings

  • Coach and motivate staff

  • Recalibrate and troubleshoot equipment as necessary

  • Support planning, staffing and execution of local events

  • Follow all Verve policies, procedures, and processes

  • Have a passion for coffee!


Physical Requirements

The following physical demands outline the requirements necessary for employees to effectively carry out the essential functions of this position. During the performance of duties, employees are expected to engage in regular communication, auditory perception, and reading tasks. Reasonable accommodations will be provided to enable individuals with disabilities to fulfill essential job functions.


This role is dynamic and involves prolonged periods of standing (or being on one's feet for up to 8 hours), walking, bending, stooping, and crouching throughout the shift. Additionally, employees will be required to lift products and packaging overhead and may frequently handle items weighing between 25 and 50 pounds. Essential vision capabilities for this role encompass close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Furthermore, adept finger and wrist dexterity are essential for successful performance in this position.


Qualifications and Requirements

  • 2+ years in a supervisory role in the food and beverage industry experience is preferred and coffee experience is plus

  • Must maintain current state-issued Food Handler Card

  • Knowledge of food safety regulations and basic culinary techniques

  • Must be 18 years or older

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities

  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, written and verbally

  • MS Office and Google Suite experience

  • Inclusive, respectful and professional and the ability to work as part of a team

  • Strong leadership abilities and a positive attitude

  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds

  • The hours are based on availability, available weekends and Holidays, hours can fluctuate due to the needs of the business.
