Job description

As a member of the Knowledge Management Department, the Risk Mitigation Analyst conducts hands-on, detail-oriented public records and investigative research in support of the firm's client engagements and internal risk management functions. The Analyst investigates individuals, companies, and related entities using public, commercial, and proprietary sources, producing clear, accurate, and well-documented findings for attorneys, firm leadership, and clients. The Analyst reports to the Risk Mitigation Research Manager and works collaboratively with attorneys, professional staff, and professional departments to fulfill research requests.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Investigative and Public Records Research

  • Conduct public-records research on individuals, companies, and related entities using public, commercial, and proprietary databases, including litigation, bankruptcy, lien, judgment, and UCC filing searches; real property records; corporate ownership and affiliate research; regulatory and disciplinary actions; sanctions and watchlist screening; and adverse media review, as appropriate to the assignment.
  • Verify subject identities and corroborate material findings across multiple sources; distinguish confirmed fact from unverified allegation and clearly identify the basis for each finding.
  • Identify patterns, anomalies, gaps, and leads within research results, and escalate material or unresolved issues to the Risk Mitigation Research Manager in a timely manner.
  • Research corporate family trees and affiliated entities to support conflicts-of-interest review.
  • Retrieve court documents, dockets, and related filings as needed to support ongoing research and investigations.

Client and Firm Risk Support

  • Research current and prospective firm clients to help assess reputational, financial, and other risk, working in coordination with new-business intake and conflicts teams.
  • Support due diligence research on prospective lateral hires.
  • Maintain and update the firm's trading-compliance watch-list database and respond to related watch-list compliance questions.

Reporting and Analysis

  • Synthesize and organize research findings into concise, accurate, and well-sourced written reports and presentation materials for distribution to attorneys, firm leadership, and clients, within the scope, timeline, and budget set for each assignment.
  • Document research methodology and sources with sufficient detail to support source attribution and auditability of findings.
  • Draft high-quality work product for review and use by the Risk Mitigation Research Manager and requesting attorneys.

Collaboration and Process Support

  • Collaborate and communicate professionally with attorneys, firm leadership, and administrative stakeholders at all levels regarding research scope, status, and findings.
  • Contribute ideas for improving research workflows, procedures, and the use of research technology, including firm-approved artificial intelligence tools, under the direction of the Risk Mitigation Research Manager.
  • Assist with current awareness alerts, search requests, and other Knowledge Management tools and resources.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging research resources and databases and support testing or adoption of new tools as directed by the Risk Mitigation Research Manager.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Support special projects such as collection development, as assigned.
  • Bill time for reference and research assistance in accordance with established firm methods and practices.
  • Provide backup support for other Risk Mitigation and Knowledge Management team members as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS (EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES):

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field required; equivalent education and work experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.

Experience:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in public-records investigations, investigative due diligence, business intelligence, legal research, conflicts, or other related risk-management research, preferably within a law firm, corporate investigations firm, or professional services environment.
  • Experience working in an Am Law 100 or Am Law 200 law firm or other large professional services organization preferred.
  • Experience supporting lateral-hire due diligence, new-business intake, conflicts, or international/cross-border research preferred.
  • Advanced degree, such as a J.D. or M.L.S., or related field preferred.
  • Experience using AI-assisted research tools or analytics platforms preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of public-records and investigative research databases and tools, such as Westlaw PeopleMap, LexisNexis Accurint, TLO, IDI Core, PACER and state court portals, Secretary of State and SEC filings, and sanctions/watchlist and news sources, or comparable equivalents.
  • Strong research, analytical, and critical-thinking skills, with sound judgment and close attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce clear, accurate, and well-organized written reports under tight deadlines.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, with strong client-service orientation.
  • Works effectively with team members and stakeholders across departments to complete assigned research.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to multi-task and prioritize competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion and the highest level of integrity.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365, Adobe Acrobat, and matter- or request-management tools.
  • Ability and willingness to use firm-approved generative artificial intelligence and research technologies responsibly—protecting confidential information, understanding tool limitations, validating outputs against authoritative sources, and maintaining source attribution—without treating AI-generated output as a substitute for professional judgment.
