Risk Management Project Internship information

What is a risk management project internship?

A Risk Management Project Internship is a temporary position, often for students or recent graduates, where interns work on projects related to identifying, analyzing, and mitigating potential risks within an organization. Interns gain hands-on experience by assisting with risk assessments, developing risk mitigation strategies, and supporting compliance processes. This role helps individuals build foundational skills in risk management, data analysis, and project coordination within industries such as finance, healthcare, or insurance.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect during a risk management project internship?

During a Risk Management Project Internship, you can expect to assist with identifying, assessing, and documenting potential risks to organizational processes or projects. Typical tasks include conducting research on industry-specific risks, supporting risk assessments, preparing reports for senior management, and helping develop mitigation strategies. Interns often collaborate with cross-functional teams such as compliance, operations, and finance, gaining exposure to real-world risk scenarios. This role provides an excellent opportunity to build analytical skills and gain insight into risk management frameworks commonly used in the industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a risk management project intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Risk Management Project Intern, you need a solid background in finance, business, or related fields, with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. Familiarity with risk assessment tools, Excel, and project management software is commonly required, along with coursework or certifications in risk management. Attention to detail, effective communication, and teamwork are essential soft skills that help you collaborate and convey complex information clearly. These skills enable interns to effectively identify risks, support project initiatives, and contribute to organizational risk mitigation strategies.

What is the difference between Risk Management Project Internship vs Risk Analyst?

AspectRisk Management Project InternshipRisk Analyst
CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate in finance, business, or related fieldsBachelor's or master's in finance, economics, or related fields; certifications like FRM or CRM are common
Work EnvironmentInternship setting, often in financial institutions, consulting firms, or corporationsFull-time role in finance, banking, insurance, or consulting companies
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by companies to train and evaluate potential future risk professionalsEstablished role responsible for ongoing risk assessment and mitigation

The Risk Management Project Internship provides hands-on experience and training for students or recent graduates, often serving as a stepping stone into the risk management field. In contrast, a Risk Analyst is a full-time professional responsible for analyzing and managing risks within an organization. While both roles focus on risk, internships are temporary and educational, whereas risk analyst positions are permanent roles requiring more experience and responsibility.

Your Opportunity
We are seeking a Risk Management Consultant to join our Energy and Resources team. In this role, you will support the delivery of engineering risk management services that help clients make informed decisions and successfully execute complex projects. This role is a remote / hybrid position, with the work requiring travel to client sites up to 10% of the year.
You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to identify, evaluate, and manage risks across the project lifecycle from early-stage studies through execution and commissioning. The role involves facilitating structured risk assessments, developing practical risk management outputs, and helping teams translate technical information into clear, actionable insights.
This position supports a range of heavy industrial sectors, including mining, power, oil & gas, water, hydro & dams, and environmental remediation. The successful candidate will be comfortable leading discussions, engaging stakeholders, and contributing as an independent, client-facing professional in both workshop and project delivery settings.
Your Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with project teams and clients to define and implement practical risk management strategies aligned with project objectives and scope.
  • Review and apply client risk management programs, adapting approaches to suit project phase, complexity, and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare for and facilitate structured risk workshops (e.g., HAZOP, HAZID, PHA, PFMA, FMEA, MAA, constructability and decision sessions) in both in-person and virtual settings.
  • Lead multidisciplinary discussions to identify risks, challenge assumptions, and drive alignment on key technical and execution uncertainties.
  • Develop, maintain, and communicate risk registers and related outputs that provide clear, decision-ready insights to project teams and stakeholders.
  • Support project teams in evaluating and prioritizing risks and identifying effective mitigation measures using principles such as hierarchy of controls and prevention through design (PtD).
  • Review technical documentation and coordinate with discipline leads to develop a working understanding of project systems, interfaces, and execution strategies.
  • Contribute to project reviews, studies, and deliverables by providing risk-informed perspectives across engineering, construction, and operational considerations.
  • Support ongoing risk monitoring and reporting, including periodic project risk updates and stakeholder communications.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with clients and internal teams, ensuring open, practical, and transparent communication of risk-related topics.
  • Assist with proposal development and scope definition for risk management and related technical services.
  • Support interpretation of applicable regulations, standards, and industry practices as they relate to project risk and safety.
  • Coordinate with third-party specialists as required and support integration of their outputs into project deliverables.
  • Maintain organized project records and documentation in accordance with project and company procedures.

  • Strong working knowledge of qualitative risk assessment methodologies (e.g., HAZOP, PHA, PFMA, FMEA, MAA).
  • Ability to quickly understand complex technical systems and translate information into clear, practical insights.
  • Strong health, safety, environmental, and community (HSEC) awareness, with a practical approach to hazard identification and risk reduction.
  • Familiarity with applicable industry regulations and standards (e.g., MSHA) is preferred.
  • Experience reviewing technical deliverables and collaborating with engineering disciplines across project phases.
  • Ability to work independently in a client-facing role while maintaining strong collaboration with internal teams.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to project sites as needed (local, national, international).
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, science, or a related technical field preferred (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Minimum 5 years of experience supporting risk management processes on engineering or capital projects, including facilitation of risk workshops.
  • Experience in heavy industry, energy, natural resources, or infrastructure sectors is preferred.
  • Field or site experience in industrial or construction environments (e.g., mining, processing, or infrastructure projects) is highly valued.
