What is an RFIC Design Manager?

An RFIC Design Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing the design and development of Radio Frequency Integrated Circuits (RFICs), which are crucial components in wireless communication systems. They lead technical teams, coordinate project timelines, and ensure that designs meet performance, quality, and industry standards. The role requires a strong background in RF circuit design, project management, and effective communication with cross-functional teams. RFIC Design Managers often collaborate closely with engineers, product managers, and customers to bring innovative wireless solutions to market.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an RFIC Design Manager?

To thrive as an RFIC Design Manager, you need deep expertise in RF circuit design, semiconductor physics, and a relevant engineering degree, often with experience in leading design teams. Proficiency with industry-standard EDA tools like Cadence, Mentor Graphics, and simulation software, along with knowledge of fabrication processes, is critical. Exceptional leadership, project management, and communication skills help coordinate cross-functional teams and drive project success. These skills ensure the delivery of innovative, high-performance RFIC solutions while meeting deadlines and quality standards in a competitive technology sector.

What are some of the main challenges faced by an RFIC Design Manager in leading multidisciplinary teams?

As an RFIC Design Manager, one of the primary challenges is coordinating communication and collaboration among diverse teams, including analog, digital, layout, and test engineers. Balancing project timelines with technical complexities, such as meeting performance specifications and ensuring first-pass silicon success, also requires strong organizational and leadership skills. Additionally, staying updated with evolving EDA tools, process technologies, and industry standards is essential to deliver competitive products. Effective stakeholder management and clear reporting are key to overcoming these challenges.

What is the difference between Rfic Design Manager vs Rfic Design Engineer?

Job Description:

Description

Skyworks is seeking motivated and enthusiastic engineering students to join our RFIC design team in Irvine as a Winter/Spring 2027 Co-Op. This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the design and development of RF/microwave integrated circuits, with a focus on Low Noise Amplifiers (LNAs) and RF switches for wireless applications.

You will work alongside experienced engineers and contribute to real product development activities, while strengthening your practical skills in circuit design, simulation, layout, and lab testing. This internship is ideal for students with a solid foundation in electrical engineering and an interest in applying their knowledge to RFIC design.

Term: Winter/Spring Co-Op (Jan - June 2027)

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design, simulation, and evaluation of RF building blocks such as LNAs and RF switches.
  • Support circuit-level schematic entry, simulations, and data analysis using CAD and RF tools (e.g., Cadence, MATLAB, ADS, or similar).
  • Collaborate with other engineers to debug issues and validate design performance.
  • Contribute to design reviews and team discussions by preparing simulation results, plots, or reports.
  • Help review layouts and prepare design documentation.
  • Participate in lab testing and measurement of RFICs using instruments such as network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, and oscilloscopes.
  • Learn and apply engineering best practices to ensure performance, reliability, and cost efficiency.

Required Experience and Skills

  • Currently pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering (with coursework in RF/microwave, analog, or semiconductor device design).
  • Strong understanding of basic circuit theory (RLC circuits, resonance, impedance matching).
  • Familiarity with RF and microwave concepts (gain, noise, linearity, bandwidth, stability) through coursework or projects.
  • Exposure to CAD and simulation tools (e.g., Cadence Virtuoso, ADS, MATLAB, or similar).
  • Strong problem-solving skills, eagerness to learn, and ability to work in a team environment.
  • Good communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Must be available to work onsite in Irvine January - May/June 2027

Desired Experience and Skills

  • Exposure to RF concepts such as impedance matching, noise, linearity, etc.
  • Coursework or project experience with LNAs, RF switches, or other RF front-end circuits.
