What is an RF drive tester?

An RF Drive Tester is responsible for testing and optimizing wireless networks by conducting drive tests using specialized equipment and software. They collect and analyze signal data to assess network performance, coverage, and quality. Their role helps identify coverage gaps, call drops, and interference issues, aiding network engineers in improving overall network efficiency. RF Drive Testers often work in the field, driving specific routes and recording network parameters to ensure seamless connectivity and performance.

What does an RF drive tester do?

As an RF Drive Tester, your day often starts with preparing drive testing equipment and planning routes to measure network quality in designated areas, which can include urban, suburban, or rural environments. You’ll spend significant time on the road conducting tests, gathering signal data, and identifying areas of poor coverage or interference. Collaboration with engineers and network optimization teams is common, as you’ll share findings and support troubleshooting activities. Flexibility is important, as work hours may vary depending on project needs and test locations, but the role offers hands-on experience with wireless technologies and opportunities for advancement into RF engineering or network optimization roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an RF drive tester?

To thrive as an RF Drive Tester, you need a solid understanding of radio frequency (RF) principles, cellular network technologies, and a relevant technical diploma or engineering degree. Expertise in using drive test tools like TEMS, Nemo, or Agilent, along with proficiency in post-processing software and data analysis, is typically required. Attention to detail, adaptability to field conditions, and strong communication skills make candidates stand out. These skills ensure accurate network measurements, effective troubleshooting, and clear reporting for successful wireless network optimization.

How can I get into being a RF drive tester?

To become an RF drive tester, candidates typically need a background in telecommunications, electronics, or electrical engineering, along with knowledge of radio frequency systems. Relevant skills include understanding signal testing, using testing equipment, and often obtaining certifications such as FCC or industry-specific credentials. Experience with field testing and the ability to work outdoors or in various environments are also important.

Job description

SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.

MANAGER, MECHANICAL ENGINEERING (STARSHIP AVIONICS)

Starship Avionics Mechanical is responsible for producing an avionics system minimizing vehicle cost/mass and providing electrical sensing, actuation, and control for flying the vehicle. Avionics includes RF communication, navigation sensors, electrical actuators, video systems, propulsion sensors, and energy storage. This role leads a team of mechanical engineers, and it is within a larger avionics team of electrical engineers designing electrical system and vehicle operations. This role will partner closely with adjacent Starship engineering and production teams to continuously improve the design and manufacturability of avionics hardware for current and next‑generation vehicles. The team’s mission is to develop highly producible mechanical designs and packaging solutions that protect electronics from the harsh mechanical and thermal environments of launch vehicle operations.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Extreme ownership of avionics engineers to enable the rapid progress of design, integration, test, and launch activities
  • Drive conceptual design, architecture trades, and first‑order sizing. Develop design requirements where definition is lacking
  • Optimize the development speed, mass, and cost of our avionics
  • Perform in‑depth first principles analysis and FEA to assess and optimize designs
  • Incorporate design for manufacturing principles, drive first article builds, and make improvements necessary to hand off subsequent builds to production
  • Provide hands‑on support of production issues and drive design, process, and procedure improvements for maximum production efficiency and rate after first‑article build
  • Design and execute development, acceptance, and qualification testing
  • Drive delivery timeline through conception, design, parts, assembly and integration, and launch
  • Work closely with analysts to develop thermal, vibration, and loading requirements and with manufacturing engineers to optimize designs for rapid manufacturability
  • Hire and develop a team to produce reliable, high production rate, and low mass/cost avionics hardware
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering, science, or math discipline
  • 5+ years of professional experience with mechanical design of components or assemblies
  • 3+ years of experience as a leader with direct reports
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
  • Creative problem solver that can bring multiple disciplines together with the ability to assess risk and make design and development decisions without all available data
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced, autonomously driven, and demanding atmosphere
  • Self‑motivated with strong multi‑tasking, organizational, communication and documentation skills
  • Strong sense of accountability and integrity
  • Solid understanding and application of GD&T
  • Proficient and frequent use of hand calculations, finite element analyses (FEA), and computer‑aided designs (CAD)
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • This position is based in Starbase, TX and requires being onsite – remote work not considered
  • Extended hours and weekend work may be required to support critical project and mission milestones
ITAR REQUIREMENTS
  • To conform to U.S. Government export regulations, the applicant must be a (i) U.S. citizen or national, (ii) U.S. lawful, permanent resident (aka green card holder), (iii) Refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, or (iv) Asylee under 8 U.S.C. § 1158, or be eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State. To learn more about the ITAR, visit the U.S. Department of State website.
