What is a Rexx programmer?

A Rexx programmer is a software developer who specializes in using the Rexx (Restructured Extended Executor) programming language. Rexx is a scripting and macro language commonly used on IBM mainframe, OS/2, and other platforms for automating tasks, data manipulation, and writing application scripts. Rexx programmers often develop, maintain, and troubleshoot scripts to streamline business processes, automate system operations, and integrate various software applications. Their work is essential for organizations that rely on legacy or mainframe systems. Rexx's readability and ease of use make it popular for rapid development of automation solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Rexx programmer?

To thrive as a Rexx Programmer, you need strong programming logic, experience in scripting, and a solid understanding of the Rexx language, often supported by experience with mainframe or batch processing environments. Familiarity with tools like IBM z/OS, TSO/ISPF, and relevant code editors, as well as knowledge of integration with other systems, is typically required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective problem-solving are vital soft skills for developing and maintaining reliable scripts. These skills ensure efficient automation, system reliability, and smooth business processes in environments where Rexx is deployed.

What are some typical projects or tasks a Rexx programmer might work on within a corporate IT team?

As a Rexx developer, you’ll commonly be tasked with writing and maintaining scripts that automate processes on mainframe systems, such as batch job scheduling, data extraction, or report generation.
