Rework Repair Operator information

What is a rework repair operator?

Rework Repair Operators are skilled technicians who inspect, troubleshoot, and repair defective or non-conforming electronic or mechanical components. They use specialized tools and follow detailed instructions to rework products to meet quality standards before they are shipped to customers. Their role is essential in manufacturing settings to minimize waste, ensure product reliability, and maintain customer satisfaction. These operators often work with circuit boards, wiring, and small parts, requiring strong attention to detail and manual dexterity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a rework repair operator?

To thrive as a Rework Repair Operator, you need a solid understanding of electronics assembly, soldering techniques, and the ability to read technical schematics, often supported by a high school diploma or relevant vocational training. Familiarity with tools such as soldering irons, microscopes, and surface-mount technology (SMT) rework stations is typically required, and IPC certification is often preferred. Attention to detail, manual dexterity, and problem-solving skills are crucial soft skills for identifying and fixing complex defects. These competencies ensure that repaired products meet quality standards and minimize downtime in manufacturing processes.

What are the most common challenges faced by a rework repair operator and how can they be effectively managed?

Rework Repair Operators often face challenges such as diagnosing complex electronic faults, managing tight production deadlines, and ensuring high-quality standards are consistently met. Staying up-to-date with the latest repair techniques and developing strong attention to detail are crucial for success. Collaboration with quality control teams and production supervisors can help address recurring issues, while proactive communication ensures that workflow disruptions are minimized. Regular training and hands-on practice are also key strategies for overcoming these challenges and advancing in the role.

What is the difference between Rework Repair Operator vs Quality Control Inspector?

AspectRework Repair OperatorQuality Control Inspector
CertificationsOften requires technical or manufacturing certificationsTypically requires quality assurance or inspection certifications
Work EnvironmentManufacturing or production floor, performing repairs and adjustmentsInspection stations, quality labs, or production lines
Employer & IndustryManufacturing, electronics, automotive industriesManufacturing, electronics, aerospace industries
Primary FocusCorrecting defects, repairing products, reworking itemsInspecting products for defects, ensuring quality standards

While both roles are essential in manufacturing, the Rework Repair Operator focuses on fixing and reworking defective products, whereas the Quality Control Inspector emphasizes inspecting and ensuring products meet quality standards. Understanding these differences helps clarify career paths and employer expectations in manufacturing environments.

This role directly supports Product, Test, and Application Engineers focused on New Product Introduction (NPI) for advanced power modules, with occasional support to sustaining engineering activities.ย

This is a hands-on execution role. The technician will collect data, build fixtures and cabling, rework PCBs, debug test setups, manage bench equipment calibration schedules, coordinate module sample logistics, execute customer sample testing, support module electrical debug, and maintain a clean and organized engineering workspace.ย

The ideal candidate is a semiconductor-experienced technician who is comfortable at the bench, works well with engineers, and has board rework and fixture construction experience.ย

Renesas Electronics, a leading global semiconductor company, is rapidly scaling its AI-focused power delivery business. Products include high-performance digital power VRMs, multiphase controllers, Smart Power Stages (SPS), Vertical Power Stages (SPS with integrated capacitors and multiple silicon die), Power Towers (power modules integrating multiple SPS-equivalents with capacitors and inductors), and power MOSFETs.

Job Description
  • Collect characterization, debug, and validation data on module engineering samples in support of Product, Test, and Application engineersย
  • Build test fixtures, cabling, and harnesses required for engineering evaluation and debugย
  • Manage bench test setups including equipment calibration, part ordering, setup, teardown, and debugging
  • Coordinate module sample logistics, including receiving, labeling, tracking, packaging, and shipping of engineering samples between Tempe, sister sites, OSATs, and customersย
  • Perform PCB rework including through-hole soldering, SMT rework, board modification, and repair to support engineering hardware readinessย
  • Debug engineering test setups, isolate hardware issues, and support engineers in identifying setup vs. device-under-test failuresย
  • Support module-level electrical debug activities including bench measurements, probing, thermal imaging, and instrumentation setupย
  • Prepare and package module samples for failure analysis send-out, ensuring proper labeling, traceability, and documentationย
  • Execute customer sample testing under engineering direction, including handling, preparation, measurement, and reportingย
  • Maintain 5S standards and general workspace cleanliness across engineering benches, fixture storage, and sample handling areasย
  • Follow ESD, safety, and material handling requirementsย
Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in Electronics, Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Technology, or related technical field preferred but not requiredย ย
  • 3-5 years of hands-on technician experience in a semiconductor engineering, test, product engineering, or module engineering environmentย
