What is Revit API Python?

Revit API Python refers to using the Autodesk Revit Application Programming Interface (API) with the Python programming language to automate tasks, customize workflows, and extend the functionality of Revit software. While the official Revit API is written in .NET languages such as C#, developers commonly use Python through tools like RevitPythonShell, pyRevit, or Dynamo. These tools enable architects, engineers, and BIM specialists to write Python scripts that interact with Revit models, making repetitive tasks more efficient and opening up advanced possibilities for design automation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Revit API Python developer?

To thrive as a Revit API Python Developer, you need a solid background in software development, strong proficiency in Python programming, and a deep understanding of Autodesk Revit and its API. Familiarity with tools like Revit add-ins, Dynamo, and version control systems, along with relevant certifications in BIM or Autodesk products, is highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set top candidates apart in this field. These competencies are crucial for efficiently automating workflows, customizing Revit functionality, and collaborating with multidisciplinary project teams.

How does a Revit API Python developer typically collaborate with architects and BIM managers in a project setting?

A Revit API Python developer works closely with architects and BIM managers to automate repetitive tasks, customize workflows, and enhance design processes within Revit. Collaboration often involves gathering requirements from design teams, developing scripts or plugins to address specific project needs, and providing technical support to ensure smooth implementation. Regular meetings and feedback sessions are common, allowing developers to refine their solutions based on user input and evolving project goals. This partnership helps streamline project delivery and improves overall efficiency for the design team.

Job description

THE OPPORTUNITY

We are seeking a Computational Design & Automation Consultant who can translate architectural and BIM challenges into reliable scripts, applications, and data workflows. This role is for a technically strong practitioner who understands both software development and the realities of active design and delivery projects.

You will work directly with architects, BIM leaders, consultants, and project teams to identify high-value problems, prototype solutions, and deliver tools that remain useful after the initial demonstration. Revit automation is central to the role. We value clear problem definition, maintainable implementation, tested results, and measurable project benefit over experimentation for its own sake.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
  • Work with project teams and internal stakeholders to identify, define, and prioritize opportunities for computational workflows and automation.
  • Develop, test, deploy, and maintain Revit scripts and add-ins using C#/.NET, Python, Dynamo, pyRevit, or other appropriate technologies.
  • Automate modeling, documentation, family creation, scheduling, data extraction, model QA/QC, reporting, and information-exchange tasks.
  • Build computational workflows that preserve design intent and produce reviewable, repeatable results.
  • Develop integrations between Revit and related design, coordination, analysis, database, web, and cloud platforms.
  • Work with model geometry, parameters, relationships, transactions, events, failures, and project data through the Revit API.
  • Convert prototypes and project-specific scripts into maintainable tools with clear interfaces, error handling, documentation, and release practices.
  • Validate automated outputs against real project conditions and establish appropriate human review and exception handling.
  • Troubleshoot software, model, deployment, and interoperability issues throughout the life of a tool.
  • Use version control, peer review, issue tracking, and testing practices appropriate to the scale and risk of each solution.
  • Train users, document workflows, gather feedback, and measure adoption and project impact.
  • Contribute reusable components, technical standards, and lessons learned across projects.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies, including AI-assisted workflows, where they provide a clear and responsible project benefit.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Three or more years of professional experience in computational design, BIM automation, AEC software development, design technology, or a closely related field.
  • Strong working knowledge of Revit and BIM project delivery in a professional AEC environment.
  • Demonstrated experience developing Revit automation with the Revit API, Dynamo, pyRevit, or a comparable framework.
  • Strong proficiency in C#/.NET or Python and working ability in at least one additional scripting or programming environment.
  • Experience translating an operational or design need into technical requirements, a working implementation, and a supportable release.
  • Understanding of software fundamentals including data structures, modular design, debugging, error handling, and source control.
  • Ability to validate automated geometry and data against project requirements rather than assuming successful execution means a correct result.
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work with both technical and nontechnical collaborators.
  • Bachelor's degree in architecture, engineering, computational design, computer science, construction technology, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
  • A portfolio or work samples demonstrating automation tools, scripts, applications, or computational project workflows.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Production experience with the Revit API and C#/.NET, including transactions, elements, parameters, geometry, events, and failure handling.
  • Experience developing deployable Revit add-ins and user interfaces with WPF or a comparable framework.
  • Proficiency with Git and experience with code review, automated testing, continuous integration, issue tracking, and release management.
  • Experience with RhinoCommon, Grasshopper, Rhino.Inside.Revit, Navisworks, AutoCAD, IFC, Autodesk Construction Cloud, or Autodesk Platform Services.
  • Experience connecting BIM applications to databases, REST APIs, cloud services, dashboards, or structured data pipelines.
  • Knowledge of computational geometry, optimization, data visualization, digital fabrication, or model-based analysis.
  • Experience supporting multiple Revit versions and tools used by active project teams.
  • Experience consulting with internal or external clients, managing scope, and communicating technical tradeoffs.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
  • Tools solve clearly defined project problems and produce accurate, reviewable results.
  • Automation reduces repetitive work, model risk, rework, or delivery time in measurable ways.
  • Solutions remain understandable, maintainable, and compatible as projects and software versions evolve.
  • Project teams trust the tools because limitations, review requirements, and failure conditions are clearly communicated.
  • Technical knowledge is shared through documentation, training, and collaboration.
