What is revenue accounting?

Revenue accounting is the process of recording, analyzing, and reporting a company's income from its business activities. This function ensures that revenue is recognized according to accounting standards, such as GAAP or IFRS, and that all financial statements accurately reflect the company's earnings. Revenue accountants play a critical role in verifying the accuracy of financial records, reconciling accounts, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. Their work helps organizations maintain transparency and make informed financial decisions.

Job description

Manager of Revenue Accounting

A growing SaaS company is hiring a Manager of Revenue Accounting to own revenue from the moment a contract is signed through the point cash lands. Working as a hands-on advisor to teams across the business, you'll weigh how deals are structured, sharpen the billing engine, and flag revenue exposure before it becomes leakage. Month to month and quarter to quarter, you'll help close the books, dig into revenue activity, square away accounts, and keep reporting clean and compliant.

It's an individual-contributor seat with genuine runway — a role built for someone who wants to shape the revenue function, not simply keep it running.

What You'll Do

  • Run the full quote-to-cash cycle, keeping it accurate at every step — from the first order form to invoicing, billing, and collections.
  • Upgrade workflows and tighten internal controls across contracts, revenue accounting, and billing so the operation can scale cleanly and hold up under scrutiny.
  • Act as the in-house authority on the billing and revenue systems, keeping bookings, billings, and recognition in step with one another.
  • Review contract changes for their recognition impact, confirm the system reflects them correctly, and ensure billing and revenue land properly under ASC 606.
  • Keep revenue recognition aligned with ASC 606 and internal accounting policy.
  • Lead the monthly close across revenue, deferred revenue, and unbilled receivables, including journal entries and reconciliations.
  • Support audits — internal and external — by assembling documentation and answering auditor questions.
  • Turn revenue data into reporting and analysis leadership can act on.

What You'll Bring

  • A degree in accounting, finance, or a related discipline.
  • At least five years in revenue accounting.
  • Hands-on experience in a SaaS or other subscription-based business (required).
  • A solid command of GAAP and ASC 606 recognition rules.
  • NetSuite exposure preferred.
  • Advanced Excel ability.
  • Sharp analytical, problem-solving, and organizational instincts.
  • A close eye for detail and accuracy.
  • Clear communication, written and spoken.
