Retired Rn Per Diem information

What is a retired RN per diem?

A Retired RN Per Diem is a registered nurse who has retired from full-time work but still works on a flexible, as-needed basis. These nurses are often called in to fill staffing shortages or cover shifts, allowing healthcare facilities to benefit from their experience without a long-term commitment. Per diem positions provide retired nurses with the opportunity to stay active in the field, earn extra income, and maintain their skills while enjoying a more flexible schedule.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a retired RN per diem?

A Retired RN Per Diem needs an active or recently expired RN license, strong clinical skills, and extensive nursing experience. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), updated infection control protocols, and common hospital equipment is important for effective practice. Flexibility, strong communication, and the ability to quickly adapt to different care settings are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities enable retired nurses to provide high-quality, reliable patient care on an as-needed basis while supporting healthcare teams during staffing shortages.

What types of healthcare settings typically hire retired RNs for per diem work, and how do these environments differ?

Retired RNs working per diem are frequently hired by hospitals, outpatient clinics, long-term care facilities, and home health agencies. Each setting offers unique opportunities and challenges: hospitals may require quick adaptation to different units, clinics often provide more predictable hours, while long-term care and home health emphasize continuity of care. Per diem roles generally offer flexibility in scheduling but may involve adjusting to new teams and protocols with each assignment. This variety allows retired nurses to leverage their experience while maintaining work-life balance.

Job description

Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA)

Lake Region Healthcare is seeking a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) involved in the administration of anesthesia and related services to all age groups, including neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatrics. As part of our independent, all-CRNA practice, the successful candidate will benefit from substantial clinical autonomy and a high degree of professional responsibility. This role requires the candidate to provide services across the entire Enterprise including our Fergus Falls, Elbow Lake, and Morris campuses. The ideal candidate brings independent experience in regional anesthesia including spinal, epidural, and ultrasound-guided nerve blocks.

The CRNA has contact with hospital employees, prospective employees, volunteers, community personnel, manufacturer representatives, pharmaceutical representatives, administration, students, trainees, and physicians. Effective interpersonal and communication skills are essential for this position. The incumbent has access to sensitive, confidential information and must be able to maintain those confidences. The incumbent establishes the work procedures and priorities within imposed deadlines.

Hours/Shifts: Casual/per diem position. Compensation $1,500 daily stipend. If more than 8 hours are worked in a day, additional hours will be paid at an hourly rate of $187.50. The candidate will be required to work out of all Enterprise locations including Fergus Falls, Elbow Lake, and Morris. Compensation for mileage will be provided when the CRNA works outside of their main work location. Casual/per diem employees are benefit ineligible but will accrue any benefit mandated by applicable state or federal law.

Qualifications: Education/Special Skills: Minnesota RN license required (CRNA). Minnesota APRN license and NBCRNA certification required upon hire. Graduation from an approved program of nurse anesthesia accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs or its predecessor. This position requires BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification upon hire. Three years of experience with an independent practice, preferred. Successful completion of the pre-employment health screening process required.
