How much do retinal cell therapy jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 8, 2026, the average hourly pay for retinal cell therapy in the United States is $21.64, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.83 and $27.16 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is retinal cell therapy?

Retinal cell therapy is a cutting-edge medical treatment that involves transplanting healthy retinal cells into the eye to replace or repair damaged cells in patients with retinal diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration or retinitis pigmentosa. This therapy aims to restore vision or prevent further vision loss by using stem cells or lab-grown retinal cells to regenerate the affected areas. Research is ongoing, and while some clinical trials show promise, retinal cell therapy is still largely experimental and not widely available as a standard treatment.

What are the typical interdisciplinary collaborations involved in a Retinal Cell Therapy role?

Professionals working in Retinal Cell Therapy often collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team, including ophthalmologists, cell biologists, biomedical engineers, and regulatory specialists. These collaborations are essential for successfully developing, testing, and implementing cell-based treatments for retinal diseases. Team members regularly coordinate on research design, clinical trial protocols, and compliance with regulatory standards, ensuring that therapies are both effective and safe. Such teamwork not only enriches the learning environment but also provides opportunities for career growth through exposure to various facets of translational medicine.

What is the difference between Retinal Cell Therapy vs Retinal Research Scientist?

AspectRetinal Cell TherapyRetinal Research Scientist
Required CredentialsMaster's or PhD in biomedical sciences, cell biology, or related fieldsPhD in neuroscience, biology, or related fields
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, clinical settings, biotech companiesResearch labs, academic institutions

Common Search & ComparisonFocus on therapy development and clinical applicationsFocus on basic research and scientific discovery

Retinal Cell Therapy professionals are involved in developing and applying treatments for retinal diseases, often working in clinical or biotech settings. Retinal Research Scientists focus on understanding retinal biology through research, primarily in academic or research institutions. While both roles require advanced degrees, their work environments and objectives differ, with therapy specialists emphasizing clinical applications and scientists emphasizing foundational research.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Retinal Cell Therapy Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Retinal Cell Therapy Specialist, you need advanced knowledge in cell biology, ophthalmology, and regenerative medicine, often supported by a PhD or relevant medical degree. Expertise with laboratory techniques such as cell culture, gene editing, and specialized imaging systems, along with familiarity with regulatory and clinical trial processes, is vital. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong collaboration and communication skills help drive innovation and effective teamwork. These skills are crucial to ensure the safe development, testing, and application of cutting-edge therapies that can restore vision and improve patient outcomes.

Job description

Description

The Department of Ophthalmology at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a Biotechnician.

About the Opportunity

This position will assist Dr. Ezequiel Salido, an assistant professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. The laboratory is also part of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine at the Health Science Center, WVU.

The research focuses on understanding the neuronal extracellular matrix (ECM), specifically examining how ECM components surrounding photoreceptors in the retina contribute to vision and are implicated in various ocular diseases. Our studies leverage a broad range of experimental approaches, including:
CRISPR-Cas9 animal models featuring mutations in ECM genes linked to human disorders
Immunohistochemistry, Western blot, PCR, Electroretinography (ERG)
In vivo retinal imaging, electron microscopy, super-resolution microscopy
AAV-based gene therapy and multi-omics analyses
Biochemical techniques to study protein interactions and post-translational modifications
For more details about Salido Lab research, please visit our lab webpage (https://salidolab.com/).

The newly hired person will join a team of vision researchers working to uncover the causes of blindness and use that information to develop innovative treatments for vision loss in humans. You will actively participate in the ongoing lab research, providing you with a unique opportunity for growth and learning in the field of vision research.

We strongly believe in work-life balance and keeping time for things we love outside our work. WVU offers generous benefits, including:
* 37.5-hour work week
* 13 paid holidays (staff holiday calendar)
* 15 annual leave (vacation) days per year or more based on years of service (employee leave)
* 18 sick days per year (for when you're ill, for when you need time to care for sick family, for your own, or your family's, regularly scheduled medical appointments. Who is family for the purpose of this leave? A lot of people in your life including immediate relatives and in-laws as well as others considered to be members of your household living under the same roof)
* WVU offers a range of health insurance and other benefits
* 401(a) retirement savings with 6% employee contribution match, eligibility to continue health insurance, and other retiree perks. Looking for more retirement benefits information? Check out retirement health insurance benefits, retirement income, and FAQ's.
