Role Overview

The Director of Retail Marketing will own the strategy, team, and execution of retailer-specific marketing programs across Cymbiotika's growing omnichannel retail business. This individual will lead a small, high-output team, and partner closely with Sales, Brand Marketing, Retail Media, Creative, and external retail partners to develop integrated campaigns that drive shopper engagement and retail velocity. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who enjoys building the strategy, developing the people who bring it to life, and rolling up their sleeves to execute it. You'll develop annual retailer marketing plans, manage and grow a small team, and lead execution—from merchandising and in-store displays to retailer marketing programs, launches, experiential activations, and retail media integration. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced, high-growth environment and enjoys turning ideas into measurable business results.

Key Responsibilities

This role carries three distinct accountabilities: setting the retail marketing strategy, building and leading the team that runs it, and personally executing the programs that move the business. Each is a real deliverable, not a nice-to-have.

Shopper Marketing Strategy

  • Develop annual shopper marketing strategies across Tier 1, Tier 2, and emerging retail partners.
  • Create retailer-specific activation plans supporting launches, innovation, seasonal moments, and promotional events.
  • Partner with Sales on Joint Business Planning and customer growth initiatives.
  • Prioritize investments to maximize incremental sales, household penetration, and brand awareness.

Team Leadership & People Management

  • Directly manage 1-2 team members (e.g., Retail/Shopper Marketing Manager or Coordinator), setting clear goals, giving regular feedback, and owning their performance and development.
  • Build team structure and capacity as the retail business scales, including hiring, onboarding, and defining roles for future team members.
  • Delegate effectively, balancing what you lead through the team against what you execute personally, so the team's capacity grows without becoming a bottleneck.
  • Serve as a mentor and thought partner to direct reports, raising the team & retail marketing expertise and cross-functional credibility.

Program Execution

  • Lead execution of omnichannel shopper marketing campaigns from concept through launch.
  • Manage retailer marketing calendars, merchandising programs, endcaps, displays, sampling, events, educational initiatives, and retailer-exclusive activations.
  • Partner with Creative to develop retailer-specific assets across digital and physical touch points.
  • Coordinate internal teams and agency partners to ensure flawless execution across every retail initiative.

Retail Media & Digital Commerce

  • Work closely with the Retail Media team to align paid media with shopper marketing priorities.
  • Ensure campaigns support both digital shelf conversion and in-store traffic.
  • Collaborate on retailer-specific landing pages, PDP enhancements, and omnichannel promotional strategies.

Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Serve as the marketing lead for key retail customers alongside the Sales organization.
  • Collaborate with Brand Marketing to adapt national campaigns into retailer-specific programs.
  • Partner with Category Management and Insights teams to identify growth opportunities.
  • Manage agency partners, production vendors, and promotional suppliers.

Measurement & Optimization

  • Track and report campaign performance across sales lift, retail velocity, shopper

engagement, retail media, and ROI.

  • Analyze retailer data and consumer insights to continuously improve programming.
  • Build post-program recaps with actionable recommendations for future activations.

Additional Duties: Perform other related duties, responsibilities, and special projects as assigned based on business needs and organizational priorities.

Qualifications

Required Experience

  • 5-8 years of experience in Shopper Marketing, Trade Marketing, Customer Marketing, or Retail Marketing within CPG, wellness, beauty, food & beverage, or consumer health.
  • Proven success developing and executing shopper marketing programs with national retailers.
  • Experience managing retailer-specific campaigns from strategy through execution. Strong understanding of retail media, omnichannel marketing, and shopper behavior.
  • Comfortable operating in a high-growth environment with evolving priorities.
  • Experience directly managing at least one direct report, with a track record of coaching and developing junior marketers.

Preferred Experience

Experience working with retailers such as:

  • Walmart
  • Target
  • Ulta Beauty
  • Whole Foods
  • Sprouts
  • Vitamin Shoppe
  • Costco
  • Amazon

Experience in supplements, wellness, beauty, or premium consumer products is strongly preferred.

The ideal candidate is:

  • A strategic thinker who loves execution.
  • Equally comfortable building annual plans and managing day-to-day activation.
  • Highly organized with exceptional project management skills.
  • Collaborative and able to influence cross-functional teams.
  • Analytical, data-driven, and focused on measurable outcomes.
  • Entrepreneurial, resourceful, and excited to help build a rapidly scaling retail
  • organization.
  • A genuine people leader who invests in developing their team, not just the plan.

Within the first year, you will:

  • Build Cymbiotika's shopper marketing playbook across all major retail channels.
  • Ramp your direct report(s) against clear goals, with a documented development plan for
  • each.
  • Launch impactful retailer-specific programs that drive sales and household penetration.
  • Increase retailer marketing partnerships and activation opportunities.
  • Improve retail velocity through integrated omnichannel campaigns.
  • Establish repeatable processes that scale with Cymbiotika's continued retail expansion.

Work Location & Schedule

This position follows an enforced hybrid schedule, requiring team members to be present in our San Diego, California office at least four days per week (Monday–Thursday). Fridays are available for remote work. This role also requires attendance at all in-person monthly team meetings and quarterly company events.

Physical Requirements

Employees should be able to sit or stand for extended periods and perform frequent computer-based tasks, including prolonged exposure to a computer screen.

Compensation & Benefits

The salary range for this position is $145,000-170,000 annually. Final compensation will be determined based on experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.

Cymbiotika offers a comprehensive total rewards package designed to support employee wellness, growth, and work-life balance.
