What are the typical responsibilities of an engineer working at a resident engineering company, and how does this role interact with project stakeholders?

Engineers at resident engineering companies are primarily responsible for overseeing construction projects on-site, ensuring that all work complies with design specifications, safety standards, and regulatory requirements. They act as the key liaison between contractors, clients, and design teams, addressing technical issues as they arise and facilitating clear communication among all parties. Daily tasks may include conducting site inspections, reviewing progress reports, and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams to resolve challenges promptly. This role offers valuable exposure to a variety of projects and is ideal for professionals who enjoy dynamic, collaborative environments and hands-on problem-solving.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Resident Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Resident Engineer, you need a solid background in civil or structural engineering, often supported by a relevant engineering degree and professional licensure (such as PE or equivalent). Familiarity with project management software, CAD tools, and construction documentation systems is typically required. Strong problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills help manage on-site teams and coordinate with clients and contractors. These abilities ensure project quality, safety compliance, and effective delivery of engineering solutions on-site.

What are Resident Engineering Companies?

Resident Engineering Companies are firms that provide on-site engineering services for construction projects. They typically assign engineers, known as resident engineers, to oversee day-to-day activities, ensure quality control, and manage compliance with project specifications. These companies act as the client’s representative on-site, addressing technical issues, coordinating with contractors, and ensuring that the project is executed according to design and regulatory standards. Their involvement helps keep projects on schedule, within budget, and up to code.

The REI will provide daily on-site supervision, ensure compliance with design and contract requirements, and coordinate with contractors, agencies, and stakeholders to ensure successful project delivery.
Candidates must hold a New York PE license; a New Jersey PE license is highly desirable as the company expands into NJ. This will be a fully on-site, long-term role with direct responsibility for managing complex projects including bridges, tunnels, heavy foundations, utility relocations, and civil infrastructure work.
Key Responsibilities
Project Oversight & Field Management
  • Serve as the owner's on-site representative, overseeing all construction activities and contractor operations.
  • Ensure all work is performed in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, codes, and contract documents.
  • Conduct daily field inspections, documenting progress, safety compliance, and quality control issues.
  • Resolve field conflicts and design clarifications promptly to minimize delays.
  • Manage multiple stakeholders, including contractors, subcontractors, design teams, utility companies, and regulatory agencies.

Project Controls & Financial Management
  • Manage project schedules using Primavera P6, reviewing and updating progress regularly.
  • Track project budgets, forecasting expenditures and managing cash flow.
  • Review, negotiate, and approve change orders, including pricing, estimating, and assessing budget impacts.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate daily, weekly, and monthly progress reports, logs, and project documentation.
  • Monitor compliance with safety and environmental regulations.

Engineering Leadership & Professional Oversight
  • Apply professional engineering judgment in evaluating design and construction issues.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior staff and field engineers.
  • Conduct inspections, testing, and verification to ensure quality standards are met.
  • Support construction management processes, including scheduling, estimating, and risk mitigation.
  • Act as a liaison between the owner and project teams, advocating for project goals and ensuring alignment with objectives.

Qualifications
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in New York required; New Jersey PE license preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Mechanical, or related Engineering field.
  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in resident engineering, construction inspection, and project management for heavy civil projects.
  • Demonstrated experience with bridges, tunnels, heavy foundations, utility relocations, and large-scale infrastructure projects.
  • Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials, codes, and standards.
  • Proficiency in Primavera P6, project scheduling, budgeting, estimating, and forecasting.
  • Experience managing change orders, contract administration, and construction negotiations.
  • Professional certifications such as CCM, PMP, or CWI strongly preferred.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work fully on-site, manage multiple priorities, and maintain a proactive approach to project delivery.

Compensation & Benefits
  • This is a per project role with hourly agreed upon rates for special inspection work.
  • Fully on-site, long-term project assignments
  • Opportunity to work on high-profile, complex infrastructure projects
  • Professional growth and mentoring in a collaborative engineering environment
