Overview
The Student Conduct Coordinator is an entry-level professional staff member within the Office of Student Conduct in the Division of Student Affairs, reporting directly to the Director of Student Conduct. This position supports the administration of a campus-based, student-centered conduct system that promotes accountability, student learning, and development beyond the classroom.
Position Summary
Serving as the primary liaison between the Office of Student Conduct and Housing and Residential Life, the coordinator provides leadership in the administration of residential student conduct processes. This role is responsible for managing housing-related conduct cases and ensuring consistent, educational, and developmentally appropriate responses to student behavior within the residential community.
The coordinator serves as a case manager for Housing and Residential Life referrals, offering guidance on case resolution, policy interpretation, and conduct procedures. This includes assisting with the investigation and adjudication of individual and student organization conduct cases, supporting students throughout the conduct process, and contributing to the integration of restorative practices under the guidance of senior staff. The coordinator would be required to work occasional nights and weekends to assist as the primary Housing Liaison and consultant for housing related conduct matters, including an on call and on-site rotation to support housing staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinate the development, implementation, and ongoing assessment of comprehensive training programs for all Housing and Residential Life staff related to student conduct processes, policy interpretation, conflict resolution, and documentation practices.
- Facilitate ongoing training for Maxient for all Housing staff.
- Serve as the Coordinator and primary trainer for Community Advisors (CAs), Graduate Assistants, and professional HRL staff on conduct-related protocols, including incident response, report writing, and adjudication processes as the Housing Liaison.
- Develop and maintain training materials, resources, and educational tools to support consistent application of conduct procedures across residential communities.
- Coordinate and deliver all ongoing outreach, professional development sessions, training, and refreshers to ensure Housing and Residential Life staff remain informed of current policies, legal considerations, and best practices in student conduct.
- Collaborate with campus partners to provide outreach and educational programming that promotes a culture of accountability, community standards, and student success within residential environments.
- Consult, educate and assist as the primary housing conduct liaison for campus partners serving as housing staff and conduct administrators.
- Assist in the investigation and adjudication of alleged violations of the NIU Student Code of Conduct, the residence hall handbook, and other institutional policies for individual students and organizations who are alleged to have violated student behavioral policy.
- Review conduct referrals, assign appropriate action, and resolve matters through administrative hearings as directed.
- Use self-regulation to manage, organize, and prioritize a caseload to ensure timely and equitable resolution of complaints, under the direct supervision of the Director of Student Conduct.
- Assist with the preparation of investigation reports, summaries of findings, and case assessments, including recommendations for sanctions consistent with the Student Code of Conduct as it relates to housing conduct.
- Utilize Maxient Conduct Manager to accurately document and manage assigned cases.
- Compile and analyze case data to support annual reporting, FOIA requests, and legally required statistical reporting.
- Maintain confidentiality of all student records in compliance with FERPA .
- Serve as a Campus Security Authority ( CSA ) and assist with Clery Act crime reporting.
- Support the implementation and coordination of restorative practices and mediation programming as alternative methods for resolution of conduct matters.
- Assist in facilitating informal resolution processes, including mediations and restorative justice conferences, under the direction of the Director of Student Conduct.
- May serve as a neutral observer in voluntary resolution proceedings.
- Serve as an educator and resource for prospective students, current students, parents, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders on the expectations of NIU’s Student Conduct.
- Counsel, advise, and refer students on their rights and responsibilities within the student conduct process.
- Interact intentionally with students and facilitate activities surrounding positive decision-making utilizing the Northern Pact.
- Assist with behavioral intervention and student support referrals in collaboration with relevant campus partners.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Director of Student Conduct.
- Based on position requirements, additional education, training, and/or work experience in the area of specialization inherent to the position, may be required.

- Bachelor’s degree in Behavioral Science, Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated interest and experience in student conduct, student affairs, or a related field through academic preparation, internship, volunteer service, or comparable experience.
- Ability to work effectively with a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.
- Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, Counseling, College Student Personnel, or a closely related field; or active enrollment in a relevant graduate program at time of appointment.
- Prior professional, graduate assistantship, practicum, or internship experience in student conduct, student affairs, or a related area at a post-secondary institution.
- Demonstrated experience reviewing conduct referrals, conducting investigative interviews, and preparing investigation reports or case summaries in a timely and organized manner.
- Familiarity with applied student development theories, counseling and intervention models, and their application within the student conduct process.
- Working knowledge of FERPA , Title IX, the Clery Act, and their implications for student conduct practice in higher education.
- Exposure to restorative justice principles, mediation frameworks, or alternative conflict resolution strategies and their application in a campus conduct context.
- Experience with conduct case management software (Maxient Conduct Manager preferred); proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, and file management applications.
- Demonstrated experience with data collection, analysis, and preparation of written summaries, executive reports, or statistical data for review by other staff or leadership.
- Commitment to and demonstrated understanding of the needs of a diverse student population, with an equity-minded approach to conduct practice and student interaction.
- Familiarity with or active membership in the Association for Student Conduct Administration ( ASCA ) or other relevant professional organizations.
