Texas A&M University's Department of Chemistry is seeking a Senior Research Instrumentation Specialist to manage the Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) Laboratory and conduct independent research focused on radical SAM enzymes and hydrogenase maturation. This role oversees laboratory operations, instrumentation usage, resource allocation, and service billing while providing expert guidance on continuous wave and pulsed EPR data collection and analysis. The specialist will support research initiatives through data interpretation, technical reporting, publications, presentations, and grant proposal development. Additionally, the position mentors and supervises students and research staff, ensuring efficient laboratory operations and advancing the department's research mission through scientific collaboration and communication.

Opportunities to Contribute

  • Manage daily operations of the EPR Laboratory, including instrumentation maintenance, equipment repairs, safety compliance, laboratory scheduling, billing, inventory management, and procurement of cryogenics, gases, and research supplies.

  • Provide technical expertise and support to principal investigators, research staff, students, and laboratory users through training, consultation, sample preparation guidance, data collection assistance, and supervision of assigned personnel.

  • Conduct independent research in anaerobic biochemistry, radical SAM enzymes, hydrogenase maturation, and EPR spectroscopy, utilizing advanced biochemistry and biophysics techniques to analyze data and summarize research findings.

  • Generate laboratory reports, experimental documentation, technical progress reports, and presentation materials while contributing to scientific publications, conference presentations, and research proposals.

  • Support research program development by assisting with grant acquisition, instrumentation proposals, procurement documentation, and preparation of materials for sponsors and stakeholders.

  • Maintain laboratory resources and communications, including website updates, organized workspaces, and coordination of collaborative research activities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

  • Eight years in repairing, operating, and maintaining scientific instrumentation, to include some supervisory experience.

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to lift and move heavy items and utilize a dolly.

A well-qualified candidate for this position will also possess:

  • PhD in Chemistry.

  • Postdoctoral-level laboratory experience with pulsed EPR techniques including ESEEM and/or ENDOR spectroscopy.

  • Three or more years of experience in operating continuous-wave and pulsed EPR spectrometers, and in interpreting the resulting data.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, teaching and organization ability.

  • Ability to work independently with a set of guidelines.

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Salary: Compensation will be commensurate based on the selected candidate's education and experience.

Special Note: Due to this position's salary having all or a portion of it being funded by grants or contracts, the continuing salary and overall employment is contingent upon availability of these funds in the future.
