How much do research scientist microfluidics jobs pay per year?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a research scientist microfluidics?
To thrive as a Research Scientist Microfluidics, you need a deep understanding of fluid dynamics, microfabrication techniques, and analytical chemistry, typically supported by a Ph.D. or related advanced degree in engineering, physics, or a life science. Expertise in CAD software, microfluidic simulation tools, cleanroom protocols, and experience with characterization instruments like microscopes and flow sensors is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and collaboration skills are highly valued in this multidisciplinary field. These competencies enable the development and optimization of cutting-edge microfluidic technologies and ensure successful teamwork in research and product development settings.
What are some common challenges faced by research scientists working in microfluidics, and how can new team members prepare for them?
Research Scientists in microfluidics often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting microfabrication processes, managing device miniaturization complexities, and optimizing fluid control in extremely small channels. Adapting quickly to evolving experimental protocols, unfamiliar instrumentation, and multidisciplinary teamwork is also common. New team members can prepare by staying current with literature, developing strong hands-on laboratory skills, and building familiarity with both theoretical and practical aspects of microfluidic systems. Being proactive in seeking mentorship and open to collaboration with engineers, biologists, and chemists will help ease the transition into these dynamic research environments.
What is a research scientist microfluidics?
A Research Scientist in Microfluidics specializes in designing, developing, and optimizing microscale fluidic systems for applications in biology, chemistry, and engineering. They conduct experiments, analyze data, and create prototypes for lab-on-a-chip devices, medical diagnostics, or drug delivery systems. Their role involves interdisciplinary collaboration, problem-solving, and applying principles of physics and engineering to control fluids at the microscale.

Job description
The Institute for Collaborative Biotechnologies (ICB) is an Army-sponsored University Affiliated Research Center (UARC). The ICB is a uniquely interdisciplinary research alliance led by the University of California, Santa Barbara, in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the California Institute of Technology, and partners from the Army and industry.
ICB research is driven by more than 50 premier faculty working together with graduate students, project scientists, specialists, and professional researchers as interdisciplinary teams of biologists, chemists, physicists, psychologists, physicians, social scientists, and engineers. These teams develop biologically inspired, revolutionary technological innovations in systems and synthetic biology, materials science and engineering, biotechnology tools and cognitive neuroscience.
The ICB is actively seeking Junior Specialists to commit effort on ICB projects. This is a large, pooled recruitment covering many disciplines and research foci. Screening of applicants is ongoing and will continue as needed through September 30, 2026. The number of positions varies depending on the needs of the department. The use of a pooled recruitment does not guarantee that an open position exists at the time you are applying. Positions may range from part-time to full-time.
Junior Specialists enable research as part of a team. Appointees to the Specialist series engage in specialized research, professional activity, and University and/or public service. Specialists use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions to the research enterprise of the University and to achieve recognition in the professional and scientific community.
