POSITION SUMMARY

The successful candidate will work on an observational and epidemiological study as part of the Vancouver Stroke Program (VSP). The candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary team, performing research duties to support day-to-day operations of the research program. The candidate will work from the Diamond Health Care Centre at Vancouver General Hospital.

As part of the Vancouver Stroke Program, the candidate will work under the general direction of the study's Principal Investigator. The responsibilities of this job will involve both administrative and research-related tasks. The candidate will gain an in-depth understanding of medical and research environments, which are an integral part of the health care field. They will work alongside clinical and research teams to facilitate stroke-related research. There are daily interactions with clinicians, patients, family members, and research staff. The setting is fast-paced and work activities are mostly situated within the Stroke Prevention Clinic. The successful candidate will have a high attention to detail and strong interpersonal skills.


ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS

The Vancouver Stroke Program (VSP) is an integrated clinical and research environment with an active profile in investigator-initiated research and has a long history as a recruiting site for Canadian and international clinical trials in acute and secondary stroke prevention. We are seeking a candidate to join our team as a research assistant. The candidate will work closely with other clinical research assistants, coordinators, and other research staff to assist in the day-to-day operations within the VSP.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

  • Review patient charts, collect and enter data in the appropriate study database
  • Maintain accuracy, accessibility, and confidentiality of study data and patient records
  • Coordinate and submit required documentation to obtain authorizing signatures from various applicable internal and external departments for approval to conduct research
  • Obtain appropriate institutional approvals and renewals to conduct research studies
  • Prepare and complete appropriate study documents and ethics submissions, including applications, annual renewals and amendments
  • Prepare and maintain study binders with source documents, case report forms and/or creation of a database for data collection
  • Assist in the appropriate storage, handling, and transfer of paper and electronic files
  • Facilitate requests for neurovascular imaging studies from Radiology Department
  • Perform deidentification of neurovascular imaging studies and send to core lab via secure file transfer protocol
  • Perform basic proofreading, editing and document formatting as needed
  • Schedule and attend study team meetings to provide updates on research study
  • Communicate regularly with the Principal Investigator and the research team
  • Carry out any other related duties as required and in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of the position
  • The candidate will participate in joint research meetings with interdisciplinary teams to ensure milestones are met and optimal performance is achieved. The tasks will require a strong work ethic and time management skills.

CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR/JUDGMENT

Errors of incorrect decisions will affect the integrity of the Vancouver Stroke Program and may negatively affect the quality of the research conducted, health of participants or caregivers, and/or the relationship with funding agencies. This position requires a very organized, detail-oriented individual with good communication skills.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general direction of the Principal Investigator. Receives specific instructions on unusual problems and matters that depart from established guidelines; routine duties are carried out under general supervision.

None but may explain work operations to others.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school graduate; undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline or graduation from a technical college or institute preferred
  • Minimum 1 year of related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills, be self-motivated and resourceful with the ability to work independently as well as collaborate as part of a team
  • Previous experience working with patients with neurological conditions, caregivers and health providers is preferred
  • Previous experience in a clinical and/or research environment is an asset
  • Familiarity with interpretation of scientific literature
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and organizational skills
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe, including Word, Powerpoint, Excel and Outlook. Experience using REDCap is an asset.
  • Successful completion of required research certification/training including but not limited to TCPS-2, ICH-GCP, Health Canada Division 5 will be expected prior to the start of research duties
