Research Lab Assistant information

What does a research lab assistant do?

A Research Lab Assistant supports scientists and researchers by preparing and maintaining laboratory equipment, conducting experiments, collecting and analyzing data, and ensuring the lab is clean and organized. They may also be responsible for documenting results, ordering supplies, and following safety protocols. Their role is essential for the smooth functioning of research projects and helps advance scientific studies efficiently.

What are some common challenges faced by research lab assistants, and how can they be effectively managed?

Research Lab Assistants often encounter challenges such as managing multiple tasks simultaneously, maintaining accuracy in data collection, and adhering to strict safety protocols. Balancing administrative duties with hands-on lab work can be demanding, especially during busy project phases. Effective time management, clear communication with the research team, and organization skills are essential to successfully navigate these challenges. Proactively seeking clarification and regular training on lab procedures can also help minimize errors and improve efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a research lab assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Research Lab Assistant, you need a background in laboratory sciences, attention to detail, and knowledge of standard lab procedures, often supported by a relevant degree or coursework. Familiarity with lab equipment, safety protocols, and data management systems such as LIMS is typically expected. Strong organizational skills, effective communication, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively set standout candidates apart. These skills are crucial for ensuring accurate experimental results, maintaining laboratory safety, and supporting research productivity.

What is the difference between Research Lab Assistant vs Research Technician?

AspectResearch Lab AssistantResearch Technician
Required CredentialsAssociate's degree or relevant certificationAssociate's degree or specialized training
Work EnvironmentLaboratory settings, assisting with experimentsLaboratory, often more hands-on with equipment
Employer & Industry UsageUniversities, research institutes, biotech firmsResearch institutions, healthcare, biotech companies
Common Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding entry-level research rolesClarifying technical support roles in labs

The main difference between a Research Lab Assistant and a Research Technician lies in their responsibilities and qualifications. Research Lab Assistants typically support experiments and perform basic lab tasks, often requiring an associate's degree. Research Technicians usually have more technical duties, including operating equipment and data collection, often with similar or additional certifications. Both roles are vital in research environments, but the Research Technician generally has more technical responsibilities.

How much is a research lab assistant paid?

Research lab assistants typically earn between $12 and $20 per hour, depending on experience, education, and the location of the lab. Entry-level positions may pay closer to minimum wage, while those with specialized skills or certifications can earn higher wages, often working part-time or full-time schedules in academic or research institutions.

How to become a research lab assistant?

To become a research lab assistant, candidates typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, with some positions preferring or requiring postsecondary education in a related field such as biology, chemistry, or physics. Relevant skills include attention to detail, familiarity with laboratory equipment, and the ability to follow safety protocols. Gaining experience through internships or volunteering can also improve job prospects.

Job description

Ayrton Energy's mission is to propel the global shift towards sustainable energy with the broad deployment of our cutting-edge hydrogen storage technology, reshaping hydrogen distribution to mirror the safety, simplicity, and efficiency of traditional fuels such as diesel or gasoline. As part of a fast-growing startup, Ayrton is looking for a dynamic Mechatronics Engineering Intern to join our team and help develop our technology into a commercial product. In this role you can anticipate a large variety of tasks - from designing new parts to programming new components and hands-on manufacturing and assembly - along with rapid learning about the hydrogen economy. You will work side-by-side with engineers and scientists to tackle challenges in reactor design, measurement systems, and laboratory automation.

You will love this job if:

  • You are excited to work at an early-stage startup on the frontier of energy systems technology, where the answers aren't always clear, and you get to help find new solutions to challenges being faced for the first time
  • You enjoy working in cross-functional teams and feel comfortable sharing your ideas
  • You thrive in fast-paced, hands-on environments and are comfortable moving between engineering offices, the shop, and the lab
  • You want to work in a collaborative and supportive team environment where everyone's role is mission-critical
  • You have a passion for clean technology and a desire to develop products for a sustainable future

Your Responsibilities:

  • Reporting to the Director of Engineering, you will work with the chemistry, mechanical, and electrical teams to help design, build, and integrate systems that support Ayrton's LOHC technology platforms
  • Assist with aspects of reactor and test equipment design, including mechanical design, engineering simulation, prototyping, manufacturing, and commissioning
  • Support the development of microcontroller-based measurement and automation tools, paired with data acquisition and processing software, for prototype laboratory equipment
  • Specify, source, and evaluate electrical and instrumentation components
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineers and research professionals to enhance laboratory functionality and rapidly improve prototype systems
  • Generate design documentation - such as schematics, wiring diagrams, and controls notes - to support design review and manufacture
  • Support hazard reviews, risk assessments, and safe operating procedures

What Success Looks Like After Your Internship:

  • You have contributed hands-on to building, commissioning, and validating Ayrton Energy's prototype and test systems
  • You have developed well-integrated measurement, controls, and automation tools that the team continues to rely on
  • You have grown into a capable technical contributor for instrumentation, controls, and automation challenges
  • You have deepened your understanding of the hydrogen economy and clean energy systems development
  • You have become a valued contributor to Ayrton's engineering culture and product development process

Your Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing, or recently completed, a Bachelor's degree in Mechatronics, Control, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Available for a 12- or 16-month co-op / internship term
  • Hands-on experience - through coursework, design teams, personal projects, or previous work terms - building and testing mechatronic systems
  • Experience working with Solidworks CAD software to produce design and manufacturing drawings
  • Experience with microcontroller platforms (e.g., Arduino, M5Stack) and programming for measurement, automation, or data acquisition
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
  • Must be legally authorized to work in Canada and able to work on-site at Ayrton Energy's facility in Calgary

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with Beckhoff PLCs, TwinCAT, EtherCAT networks, and embedded controller platforms such as M5Stack is considered an asset
  • Experience working with fuel cell, electrolyzer or related electrochemical systems an asset
  • Familiarity with hydrogen and hazardous area classification standards an asset

We encourage you to apply even if you don't meet every requirement - your unique experience and perspective matter

Internship Details:

  • Internship length is 12 or 16 months
  • This is a paid, on-site internship based at our Calgary facility
  • You'll receive mentorship from experienced engineers and scientists, and hands-on ownership of meaningful projects

At Ayrton We Value:

  • Honesty and Candor - We are solving hard problems and look for diverse thought - challenging leadership is encouraged
  • Dependability - We value action over words and will empower you to get things done
  • Be Kind - We are a team. Win together, lose together, learn together
