What is a research intern?

Research interns are individuals, often students or recent graduates, who work temporarily in a research setting to gain practical experience and contribute to ongoing projects. They assist with tasks such as data collection, analysis, literature reviews, and sometimes experimental work under the supervision of experienced researchers. Research internships are valuable opportunities for interns to develop relevant skills, broaden their academic or professional networks, and explore potential career paths in research or academia.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a research intern?

To thrive as a Research Intern, you need strong analytical abilities, attention to detail, and foundational knowledge in your field of study, often supported by enrollment in a relevant degree program. Familiarity with data analysis software (such as SPSS, R, or Excel), literature databases, and sometimes laboratory equipment or programming languages is typically required. Effective communication, curiosity, and time management are vital soft skills that help interns collaborate and contribute meaningfully to research projects. These competencies are important for producing accurate findings, supporting team objectives, and gaining valuable hands-on experience in research environments.

What are some typical challenges a research intern might encounter when starting out, and how can they be addressed?

Research Interns often face challenges such as adapting to new research methodologies, managing multiple tasks with tight deadlines, and learning to navigate academic or corporate research environments. To address these, it's helpful to proactively communicate with your supervisor for clear expectations, seek mentorship from experienced team members, and utilize organizational tools to track assignments. Embracing a collaborative mindset and asking questions early on can also ease the transition and foster professional growth.

Key Responsibilities:

Your primary mission is to protect data integrity and design highly functional business workflows within OTD. Duties include:

  • Database Management & Integrity: Audit and manage database structures tracking university intellectual property (innovations) and agreements to ensure complete data integrity from initial contact through project completion.

  • Operational Data Analysis: Compile monthly status reports on IP pipelines, outreach metrics, and licensing lead statuses to present to OTD leadership.
  • Leadership Dashboards: Create and maintain Microsoft Power BI dashboards utilizing data from Salesforce for university leadership.

Exclusive Professional Development & Training
To ensure your success, you will receive elite training and networking opportunities that will make your resume stand out:

  • Salesforce CRM Training: Gain advanced experience in data structure mapping, report customization, and record management in the world's leading CRM.
  • The Adams Center for Entrepreneurship: Access business-model planning and operational training resources.
  • AUTM (Association of University Technology Managers): Gain exposure to standardized national frameworks for technology transfer data logging and intellectual property compliance.

Role Overview & Team Structure

Are you an analytical thinker who loves optimization, data structures, and process design? This is your launchpad. We are seeking ambitious Undergraduate's and Graduate students for a highly collaborative, team-based internship in database and business operations for the full academic year.

You will work as a central operations resource within our technology transfer office. Your primary objective will be to ensure absolute data integrity, optimize databases, draft Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and translate data-driven process changes for students, faculty, and staff. This hybrid role balances technical process engineering with active peer education, providing a strong foundation for future roles in operations, consulting, or data systems.

Who You Are (Desired Skills & Qualifications)

  • Academic & Program Eligibility: Enrolled FAU undergraduate or graduate student. Must have a confirmed Federal Work-Study (FWS) award for the 2026-2027 year.
  • Analytical Mindset: Spreadsheet skills (Microsoft Excel/Google Sheets) and database concept comprehension.
  • Process Documentation Skills: Technical writing skills; able to break down multi-step database procedures into logical, easy-to-follow user guides.
  • Presentation & Peer Education: Public speaking and presentation capabilities; comfortable presenting technical processes to non-technical users.
  • Reliability & Execution: Self-motivated and detail-oriented, with the ability to lead projects independently, solve complex tracking issues, and deliver polished results.

Why You Should Apply

Operations Leadership Experience: Stand out from graduates who only have academic data experience by showing you have designed database workflows, documented corporate systems, and personally trained institutional staff on enterprise database systems. Flexible & Hybrid: This position offers a flexible schedule that respects your classes, combining remote lead generation with high-energy, in-person strategy sessions
on the Boca Raton campus (other campuses can be considered).
