What does a research development process engineer do?

A Research Development Process Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing processes in research and product development settings. They work to improve efficiency, quality, and scalability of new products or technologies by bridging the gap between research and manufacturing. Their role often involves collaborating with scientists, engineers, and production teams to ensure that innovative concepts can be effectively and safely produced at a larger scale. They also analyze data, troubleshoot problems, and implement improvements to meet regulatory and business requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a research development process engineer?

A Research Development Process Engineer requires a solid background in chemical or process engineering, problem-solving abilities, and typically a bachelor's or master's degree in a relevant field. Familiarity with process simulation software (such as Aspen Plus or MATLAB), statistical analysis tools, and industry-specific certifications like Six Sigma are often expected. Strong analytical thinking, teamwork, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure successful innovation, efficient process optimization, and seamless collaboration in research-driven engineering environments.

What are the main challenges research development process engineers face when transitioning projects from R&D to full-scale production?

One of the primary challenges Research Development Process Engineers encounter is ensuring that innovative processes developed in the laboratory can be effectively scaled up for manufacturing without compromising quality or efficiency. This often involves troubleshooting unforeseen issues, optimizing process parameters, and collaborating closely with cross-functional teams such as manufacturing, quality assurance, and supply chain. Navigating regulatory requirements and managing tight project deadlines are also common hurdles. Successful engineers leverage strong problem-solving skills and clear communication to bridge the gap between research concepts and practical, large-scale implementation.

Job Description

The Process Engineer III plays a key role in leading the design for a defined scope of work-such as an area, a series of unit operations, or systems-within a project. This position is responsible for managing scope, budget, and schedule for assigned work, which typically involves small to medium-sized projects of moderate complexity.

The Process Engineer III works closely with clients to understand design requirements, translate them into actionable scope, and document open issues, decisions, and next steps to keep the design moving forward. This role also requires identifying deviations from contracted scope or changes in design direction and escalating them to the Discipline Lead or Project Manager as needed.

Core Responsibilities

  • Manage multiple complex tasks, set priorities, and direct the work of others-working independently or under the guidance of a Lead Engineer or Project Manager.
  • Build and maintain strong technical networks internally and externally.
  • Establish trusted relationships with clients, vendors, and other stakeholders.
  • Support broader organizational initiatives such as Technical Advancement, Vertical Markets, and leadership opportunities.
  • Contribute to advanced deliverables and activities requiring deeper expertise, including:
    • Technical bid tabulations
    • Vendor package management
    • Factory acceptance testing
    • Risk assessments
    • HAZOP/HCCP and similar reviews
    • 3D model review and coordination
    • Preparing sequences of operations and reviewing functional specifications
  • Participate in cross-discipline and discipline-specific checks for small projects of intermediate complexity, ensuring overall project quality.
  • Mentor junior engineers and design staff.
  • Lead system design programming and planning with support from senior team members.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • ABET-accredited bachelor's degree in a discipline-specific field
  • At least 5 years of experience in an operating company or design firm within a related industry
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Intermediate knowledge of industry standards, regulatory guidance, and building codes

Preferred Qualifications

  • EIT or PE certification
  • Proven ability to perform complex engineering tasks with minimal supervision
  • Experience coordinating and managing design efforts within project teams and with construction partners and vendors
  • Familiarity with construction support activities such as RFI responses, submittal reviews, punch list development, and progress reporting
  • Basic experience with commissioning, startup, qualification, and troubleshooting of process systems
