What does a research development process engineer do?

A Research Development Process Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing processes in research and product development settings. They work to improve efficiency, quality, and scalability of new products or technologies by bridging the gap between research and manufacturing. Their role often involves collaborating with scientists, engineers, and production teams to ensure that innovative concepts can be effectively and safely produced at a larger scale. They also analyze data, troubleshoot problems, and implement improvements to meet regulatory and business requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a research development process engineer?

A Research Development Process Engineer requires a solid background in chemical or process engineering, problem-solving abilities, and typically a bachelor's or master's degree in a relevant field. Familiarity with process simulation software (such as Aspen Plus or MATLAB), statistical analysis tools, and industry-specific certifications like Six Sigma are often expected. Strong analytical thinking, teamwork, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure successful innovation, efficient process optimization, and seamless collaboration in research-driven engineering environments.

What are the main challenges research development process engineers face when transitioning projects from R&D to full-scale production?

One of the primary challenges Research Development Process Engineers encounter is ensuring that innovative processes developed in the laboratory can be effectively scaled up for manufacturing without compromising quality or efficiency. This often involves troubleshooting unforeseen issues, optimizing process parameters, and collaborating closely with cross-functional teams such as manufacturing, quality assurance, and supply chain. Navigating regulatory requirements and managing tight project deadlines are also common hurdles. Successful engineers leverage strong problem-solving skills and clear communication to bridge the gap between research concepts and practical, large-scale implementation.

What is the difference between Research Development Process Engineer vs Research Scientist?

Job description

The Research & Development Field Account Manager Strategic Accounts is a field-based role who drives earlystage value creation in assigned Strategic Accounts by building deep customer R&D site engagement, maintaining regular onsite presence at discovery and R&D labs, (located in the Seattle Region), supporting pilot and clinicalphase process trials, ensuring transparency and control of the molecule and process footprint, and converting validated technology seedings into structured opportunities for commercial teams.

What you will accomplish together with us:

  • Build sustained relationships at Strategic Account R&D sites with scientific and managerial stakeholders to increase access, trust, early visibility of molecule programs, discovery and R&D process decisions

  • Map and maintain molecule pipeline visibility by tracking program status, site footprint, and upcoming decision points from discovery through R&D to enable timely technology seeding and opportunity creation

  • Identify and prioritize earlystage technology seeding opportunities by translating R&D process needs and discoverystage requirements (e.g. media, cell line, critical raw materials, data/analytics enablement) into concrete use cases and aligning required Business Units technical experts for validation support, including new molecules, processes, and modalities to create future longterm value beyond existing business

  • Drive validation of selected technologies through process & product trials and defined process steps with the customer, including scaleup / scaledown and manufacturingsensitive validation where applicable, applying a processconsultancy approach, documenting outcomes and readiness signals to support progression toward pilot/clinical or manufacturing adoption

  • Support pilot and clinicalphase (Phase I-III) process and product trials by enabling scaleup / scaledown validation, process optimization, and manufacturingsensitive readiness in collaboration with Product Development, Tech Transfer, and CMOs

  • Control and monitor the new process landscape within the account (new processes, transfers, new modalities) by flagging footprint changes, risks, and implications early to relevant internal stakeholders

  • Execute structured handovers of validated programs to the commercial scope by packaging stakeholder maps, process context, validation evidence, and next actions

  • Ideal candidate will reside in the Seattle, WA Region.

What will convince us:

  • Master's degree in Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Biochemical Engineering, or comparable field

  • 3+ years in customer-facing roles in biopharma environments (e.g., process development support, technical sales, applications, scientific support) with strong exposure to R&D contexts

  • Demonstrated ability to operate credibly in highly scientific environments and translate early R&D needs into structured validation and adoption paths

  • Confident communicator able to influence diverse, senior decision makers and partner with Technical Sales to shape complex customer solutions

  • Strong stakeholder management across customer R&D networks and internal matrix teams

  • High proficiency in CRM (SFDC) and disciplined documentation for structured handover (pipeline tracking, customer processes, validation evidence, decision points) for datadriven sales steering

  • Willing to travel >50% as this role is heavily focused on external customers

  • Identification with our core values: Sustainability, Openness, Enjoyment

Compensation for this position will be a base salary between $100,000 and $125,000, depending on experience and qualifications, plus a sales incentive plan and car allowance.
