  • Hours: 20 to 40hrs a week

Position Overview:
The Endeavor Health Department of HPB Surgery Undergraduate Research Program offers current undergraduate students entering their third or fourth year the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in clinical, and artificial intelligence (AI) research. Under the mentorship of Endeavor Health physicians, scientists, and research staff, students will contribute to projects involving human subjects research, clinical trials, surgical simulation, machine learning, surgical video analysis, and outcomes research.
In addition to participating in research activities, interns will support the development of AI-driven educational materials, digital communications, and research dissemination through presentations, videos, websites, and social media. The program provides exposure to interdisciplinary collaboration among clinicians, researchers and statisticians while developing skills in research methodology, data analysis, scientific communication, and emerging AI technologies.
What You Will Do / Job Responsibilities
  • Research Interns may participate in a variety of research, AI, and program activities, which may include:
  • Participate in assigned clinical, and AI research projects under the supervision of faculty mentors.
  • Attend and participate in research team meetings.
  • Conduct literature searches and reviews to support ongoing research.
  • Perform chart abstraction, data collection, and data extraction with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Collect, clean, preprocess, organize, and analyze structured and unstructured research data.
  • Maintain data integrity and assist with the creation, management, and maintenance of research databases, including surgical video and AI project databases.
  • Prepare datasets for statistical analyses and contribute to abstracts, manuscripts, scientific posters, presentations, and grant submissions.
  • Edit surgical videos using Adobe Premiere Pro.
  • Maintain and organize surgical video databases using Microsoft Excel and other database platforms.
  • Collect and analyze data from the Surgical Simulation Laboratory.
  • Design, develop, and maintain AI-assisted brochures, graphics, infographics, educational materials, and digital content.
  • Assist with website development, maintenance, and content updates.
  • Create, schedule, and manage social media content to support research, education, and departmental initiatives.
  • Develop professional presentations for conferences, educational programs, research meetings, and departmental activities.
  • Produce and edit research and educational videos.
  • Design, distribute, and analyze surveys to support research and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Develop, maintain, and optimize research databases and data management systems.
  • Develop, train, evaluate, and optimize machine learning and computer vision models for surgical video grading and analysis.
  • Build deep learning pipelines for image segmentation, feature extraction, motion tracking, object detection, and classification tasks.
  • Prepare, curate, annotate, and perform quality control on medical imaging and surgical video datasets.
  • Implement machine learning workflows using Python and related frameworks.
  • Conduct model validation, cross-validation, performance evaluation, and error analysis to improve algorithm accuracy and reliability.
  • Design, execute, document, and track AI and machine learning experiments.
  • Collaborate with surgeons, clinicians, and research staff to refine research questions and translate AI outputs into clinically meaningful insights.
  • Develop readable, well-tested, and well-documented code while contributing to shared repositories.
  • Perform other research- and program-related duties as assigned.

What You Will Need:
  • Education: Undergraduate student pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, Artificial Intelligence, Public Health, Health Sciences, Biology, Neuroscience, or a related field.
  • Preference for students entering their third or fourth year of undergraduate study.
  • Experience: Prior research experience required.
  • Skills: Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Python or other programming languages used for data analysis or machine learning.
  • Familiarity with machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, or medical imaging concepts.
  • Experience with Adobe Premiere Pro, Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or other graphic and video editing software.
  • Experience with website development or content management systems.
  • Experience managing or creating content for social media platforms.
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted content creation tools and digital media production.
  • Interest in surgery, surgical education, simulation, AI, medical imaging, or healthcare innovation.
