Job description

Research Data Collector (Staff Wage)

The Active Playful Learning Project seeks applicants for Research Assistants to support the data collection efforts. The incumbent will become part of a vibrant team of research staff conducting research on active playful learning in Loudoun County Public Schools. The Active Playful Learning (APL) Research Assistant will work with the University of Virginia, a subrecipient of a LEGO Foundation grant, to support the goals of the project measuring the impact of Active Playful Learning in classrooms across the U.S. This role will include both on-site work in Loudoun Co, VA elementary schools, as well as remote work.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Conduct observations: conduct classroom observations through using an observation tool and rating forms.
  • Consent distribution and collection: distribute and collect paper-based or electronic consents, following defined scripts and procedures.
  • Record and enter data: accurately document data collected in the field, and enter it into digital systems (e.G., Smartsheets, redcap) for further analysis.
  • Manage data collection materials: prepare and transport data collection instruments and materials to and from field sites; track usage and ensure return of all study-related tools.
  • Schedule and coordinate field visits: coordinate with teachers to schedule site visits, ensuring minimal disruption to instructional time and maximum compliance with research schedules.
  • Follow research protocols and ethical guidelines: follow protocols and guidelines established in accordance with research team; maintain confidentiality and data security in all research activities.
  • Report progress: provide regular status updates to the research team, flagging any issues related to data quality, scheduling conflicts, or participant engagement.
  • Meetings and training: attend regular meetings and training sessions provided by the national or local team through virtual platforms (e.g., Zoom, Teams).

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: Associate's degree required; may accept equivalent combination of experience, education, certification in lieu of degree.
  • Experience: 2+ years of lab experience which may include student experience.
  • Licensure: None.
  • This position requires that you have reliable transportation to commute to/from Loudoun County Public Schools.
  • Physical Demands: This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.

Preferred Requirements

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Education, Psychology, Social Science, Public Policy, or a related field
  • Experience with data collection in educational or social science research settings
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Proficiency in using basic software tools (e.g., Excel, Google Sheets, survey platforms)
  • Ability to travel to and from school or research sites, often during school hours
  • Experience working in K-12 settings
  • Experience with structured observations or behavioral coding

Compensation and Duration

  • Temporary contract, predominantly between July/August 2026 to May 2027
  • Estimated weekly hours: 20-25 hours per week.
  • Reimbursement for travel/mileage is available at the IRS current rate.
  • Anticipated pay range: $21-25
