What is a research assistant software developer?

Research Assistant Software Developers are professionals who support research projects by developing, maintaining, and optimizing software tools and applications. They work alongside researchers, helping to design experiments, process data, and create algorithms or simulations necessary for the research. Their role bridges the gap between software engineering and academic research, ensuring that technical solutions meet the specific needs of scientific studies. This position often requires strong programming skills, familiarity with research methodologies, and the ability to collaborate in interdisciplinary teams.

What are some common challenges faced by research assistant software developers when working on interdisciplinary research projects?

Research Assistant Software Developers often collaborate with researchers from diverse academic backgrounds, which can introduce challenges in communication and aligning technical requirements with research goals. Adapting software solutions to evolving project needs and integrating new methodologies or datasets can require quick learning and flexibility. Software Engineer II / Software Developer II (React Native)

Build what's next for players.

We're a startup inside Sony PlayStation. Fast-moving, experimental, and highly ambitious. Backed by the scale, resources, and trust of Sony Interactive Entertainment. We're building new mobile and web experiences that help gamers connect, discover, and play together in better ways. This is a rare opportunity to design at startup speed and drive huge impact inside the largest gaming company in the world.

We are seeking a Software Engineer II specializing in React Native and high-performance mobile development. In this role, you will design, build, and improve mobile experiences while contributing to the architecture, frameworks, and technical practices that support our applications.

You will collaborate closely with engineers, product managers, designers, and researchers to deliver user interfaces that are performant, accessible, reliable, and delightful at scale. You will take ownership of meaningful features from development through release and production support.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, test, release, and maintain mobile application features using React Native and modern JavaScript and TypeScript.
  • Contribute to the evolution of frontend architecture, reusable components, development patterns, and technical standards.
  • Partner with product managers, designers, and researchers to translate user experience requirements into practical, maintainable technical solutions.
  • Write maintainable, well-tested code and contribute to code reviews, documentation, testing practices, and release processes.
  • Investigate, diagnose, and resolve application defects, performance issues, and production incidents.
  • Collaborate with the backend team to deliver reliable end-to-end experiences.

 Requirements

  • 3+ years of professional software development experience, including experience building React Native applications or high-performance JavaScript and TypeScript applications.
  • BS/MS degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Strong understanding of React Native, JavaScript, TypeScript, component architecture, state management, and mobile application development.
  • Experience profiling, debugging, and optimizing frontend or mobile application performance.
  • Understanding of cross-platform application architecture and communication between JavaScript and native modules.
  • Experience delivering production-quality mobile applications using React Native.
  • Experience building reusable UI components and maintainable frontend systems.
  • Ability to independently deliver well-defined projects while collaborating effectively with engineers and cross-functional partners.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and debugging skills.
  • Passion for delivering high-quality user interfaces with excellent performance and usability.
Bonus
  • Experience building social, community, gaming, or other consumer products.
  • Familiarity with VoIP, call dialing and ringing flows in Android/React Native
  • Experience with accessibility, internationalization, and UI testing frameworks.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and modern build systems for frontend development.
  • Previous experience at an early-stage startup or on a zero-to-one product team.
