Palo Alto Veterans Institute for Research (PAVIR) supports the nation's second largest research program conducted among the VA Hospitals and is looking for a full-time Life Sciences Lab Assistant. The Life Sciences Lab Assistant position is located at the VA Palo Alto Medical Center and calls for a highly motivated, intelligent, responsible, conscientious, and detail-oriented individual who is interested in conducting cardiovascular research. The successful candidate should be a quick learner who enjoys acquiring new skills, advancing projects independently and collaboratively. The ideal candidate should have prior experience in human cell culture, standard molecular biology techniques, and general mouse handling.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with the production, maintenance, and of human valve cells.
  • Cellular analysis assistance including immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, RNA isolation, qPCR, western blots.
  • Assist with feeding mice and performing mouse echocardiography.
  • Assisting with monitoring and managing supplies.
  • Aiding with the generation of media and stock solutions.
  • Following and ensuring compliance with institutional and federal guidelines in health, safety and animal regulations.
  • Preparing figures and protocols.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Required: Undergraduate student;
  • 0-1 year undergraduate related research or lab experience;
  • Desired: Area of study in Biological Sciences, Bioengineering, or related disciplines;
  • More than 1 year research lab experience;
  • Willingness to work with animals and human tissues;
  • Strong organizational skills, work ethic, ability to multi-task and meet deadlines;
  • Ability to work independently as well as with others as a team in a productive manner;
  • Cover letter providing additional information and explaining your qualifications, interests, and career goals is desired.
