How much do repo agent jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 19, 2026, the average hourly pay for repo agent in California is $21.71, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $12.95 and $26.83 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a repo agent?

Repo agents, short for repossession agents, are professionals hired by lenders or financial institutions to recover property—most commonly vehicles—that have been defaulted on by borrowers. Their primary responsibility is to locate and legally repossess collateral when a borrower fails to make payments as agreed. Repo agents typically work with banks, credit unions, and finance companies, and must follow strict legal guidelines to avoid breaching the peace during repossession. The job often requires investigative skills, discretion, and a thorough understanding of state and federal repossession laws.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a repo agent?

To thrive as a Repo Agent, you need a solid understanding of repossession laws, attention to detail, a valid driver's license, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with GPS tracking systems, recovery management software, and sometimes certification from organizations like the Certified Asset Recovery Specialist (CARS) program are typical. Strong negotiation, conflict resolution, and effective communication skills help you handle tense situations and interact professionally with clients and debtors. These abilities are essential for ensuring legal compliance, personal safety, and successful asset recovery in challenging and dynamic environments.

What challenges do repo agents face in the field, and how can they be managed?

Repo Agents often encounter challenging situations such as dealing with uncooperative or confrontational vehicle owners, working irregular hours, and operating in varying weather conditions. To manage these challenges, agents rely on strong communication skills, thorough knowledge of legal regulations, and situational awareness. Most employers provide training on conflict de-escalation and safety protocols, and teamwork with dispatchers and other agents is essential for support and coordination during repossession assignments.

What is the difference between Repo Agent vs Repo Clerk?

AspectRepo AgentRepo Clerk
CredentialsDriver's license, sometimes a repossession licenseBasic administrative skills, possibly some licensing depending on state
Work EnvironmentOn-site at repossession locations, vehicle lots, or client sitesOffice settings, administrative offices, or remote work
Employer & IndustryRepossession agencies, auto finance companies

Repo Agents are responsible for physically locating and recovering vehicles, often working in the field. Repo Clerks handle administrative tasks related to repossessions, such as documentation and record-keeping. While both roles support the repossession process, Repo Agents focus on fieldwork, whereas Repo Clerks focus on office-based tasks.

How do repo agents get paid?

Repo agents typically earn commissions or fees based on the number of successful repossessions they complete. They may also receive a flat fee per case or a percentage of the recovered value, often working on a contractual or hourly basis depending on the employer or agency. Compensation can vary depending on experience, location, and the specific company's payment structure.

How to become a repo agent?

To become a repo agent, you typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, a valid driver's license, and a clean driving record. Many employers require prior experience in collections or security, and some states may require a license or certification. Strong communication skills, knowledge of local laws, and the ability to work independently are also important.

What do repo agents do?

Repo agents are responsible for locating and recovering vehicles or property when borrowers default on loans. They often work with law enforcement and use tools like GPS tracking and skip tracing techniques to find assets, following legal procedures and company policies. Strong communication skills and knowledge of repossession laws are important for this role.

Job description

About Us:

Here at Ambience, we never set out to be just another scribe. We’re building the AI intelligence platform that restores humanity to healthcare and drives meaningful ROI for health systems across the country.

Our technology helps providers focus on delivering great care by removing the administrative burden that pulls them away from patients and away from their most impactful work. Ambience delivers real-time coding-aware documentation and clinical workflow support across ambulatory, emergency and inpatient settings at the top health systems in North America.

Our teams operate relentlessly with extreme ownership to build the best solutions for our health system partners. We value candor, positivity and deep thought — and we expect a lot from each other because we know the problems we’re solving truly matter.

Ambience was ranked #1 for Improving the Clinician Experience in the KLAS Research Emerging Solutions Top 20 Report, recognized by Fast Company as one of the Next Big Things in Tech, named one of the best AI companies in healthcare by Inc., and selected as a LinkedIn Top Startup in 2024 and 2025. We’re backed by Oak HC/FT, Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), OpenAI Startup Fund, and Kleiner Perkins — and we’re just getting started.

The Role:

Ambience is building AI systems that help clinicians deliver better care. To do that well, our engineers — and the AI agents working alongside them — need fast, reliable, low-friction systems for building, testing, verifying, and shipping software.

You’ll own the developer-productivity substrate for Ambience: dev environments, build/test workflows, CI, internal tooling, repo standards, verification systems, and safe tool access for agent-assisted development.

The core idea: the same infrastructure that makes engineers effective also makes agents useful. Fast local stacks, deterministic tests, clear repo context, and repeatable verification loops turn agents from code generators into force multipliers.

Our engineering roles are hybrid in our SF office, 3x/week.

What You’ll Own:

  • Developer Environments — Own the local dev experience: devboxes, local DBs, Docker workflows, dependencies, secrets, and agent ergonomics.
  • Build, Test, and CI — Make feedback loops faster and more reliable. Reduce flaky tests, improve CI failure modes, and align local validation with CI.
  • Verification Infrastructure — Build reusable checks for high-risk workflows: frontend flows, migrations, schema changes, integration paths, API contracts, and structured evidence that lets reviewers trust agent-generated code.
  • Internal Tooling — Replace bespoke scripts and tribal knowledge with paved-road workflows: CLIs, scaffolds, templates, codegen, migration helpers, and release utilities that make the right workflow the default.
  • Agent Tool Access — Create scoped, auditable access to local DBs, browsers, GitHub, CI, logs, and docs while keeping PHI and production-data workflows controlled.

Who You Are:

  • You have a Bachelors degree and 7+ years of experience, or equivalent
  • 7+ years of software engineering experience with Staff-level impact across teams.
  • Deep experience building developer productivity, platform, CI, test, or internal tooling systems that engineers adopted.
  • Strong backend/platform fundamentals in TypeScript, Rust, Go, Python, or similar.
  • Daily user of Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, or equivalent on real production codebases.
  • Clear opinions on where agents help, where they fail, and what infrastructure makes them reliable.
  • Sound security judgement — can translate risk into practical controls without freezing progress.
  • Willing to work from our San Francisco office 3x/week.
Pay Transparency

We offer a base compensation range of approximately $250,000–$300,000 per year, exclusive of equity. This intentionally broad range provides flexibility for candidates to tailor their cash and equity mix based on individual preferences. Our compensation philosophy prioritizes meaningful equity grants, enabling team members to share directly in the impact they help create.

Outside of this range? We still encourage you to apply. We take an individualized approach to compensation that accounts for experience, scope, and the life factors that matter to each candidate.

Life at Ambience

Working at Ambience means opting into a high-ownership, high-trust environment built for people who want to grow fast, operate decisively and focus on work that matters. This could be the right place for you if you want to

  • Work on mission-critical AI technology that directly improves clinicians’ day-to-day lives and health system financial health across some of the most complex, high-stakes workflows in the world.
  • Join a “dream team” culture where we hire exceptional people, expect exceptional outcomes and invest deeply in feedback and continuous growth. We operate as a championship team, and that means being ok with hard, uncomfortable, ambiguous problems that lead to real greatness.
  • Operate with real ownership and accountability in an environment where there are no bystanders: If something is broken, we fix it! You will have meaningful autonomy and be expected to drive work to completion.

To help you do your best work, we pair these expectations with benefits intentionally designed to help you feel supported and safe at Ambience and beyond. Some of our key benefits include

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage for you and your dependents
  • 401(k) with a company match of up to 3% of base salary
  • A remote-friendly culture (with a San Francisco HQ) and full equipment provisioning to ensure you can work effectively from wherever you’re based.
  • Parental leave to support your family needs
  • Annual company-wide off-sites, team off-sites and regular team lunches and all-hands gatherings, with travel, lodging and meals covered
  • Flexible time off with no annual cap, company-wide holidays and an annual holiday shutdown from December 24–January 1 designed to support real rest and long-term sustainability.
