Senior Commercial Operations Analyst

Job description

Welcome to the future of energy

Octopus is a tech-powered energy company. We believe technology has the power to address our greatest challenge, climate change, while also delivering incredible service and customer experience.

We are changing the way people interact with their energy company - by making it approachable, low cost, easy-to-understand, and most importantly, 100% renewable.

We’re hiring a Senior Commercial Operations Analyst to help build the future of energy in the US.

Pricing is a big piece of the puzzle, but as part of our core Commercial team, you’ll wear a lot of hats. One day you’re building automated models and commercial reports; the next, you’re refining customer contracts, streamlining a process, or helping structure a new deal. We operate as a small, high-leverage team within a rapidly evolving business. We don't believe in rigid job specs that put people in boxes because no two days are the same. Instead, we’re looking for someone curious, deeply analytical, and excited to jump into messy problems with light supervision and plenty of freedom to figure out the best solution.

What you’ll do
  • Own and support pricing across the business: product prices, customer contracts, and the analysis that sits underneath them. You’ll work on both residential and commercial.
  • Support day-to-day commercial operations. That includes analysis, reporting, and the practical work that keeps the commercial function running.
  • Produce clear commercial reporting and ad hoc analysis for the team and for stakeholders across the business.
  • Work with commercial, sales, finance, operations, and tech on whatever the business needs that week: a deal, a product change, a process, a number someone has to trust.
  • Improve how we work. Challenge processes, build better tools and reports, and move recurring work away from manual workarounds.
  • Any other interesting challenges and opportunities which are guaranteed to pop up along the way. We have a very flat, open structure. You’ll be expected to be independent and run with your own projects with relatively light supervision.
What you’ll need
  • Analytical confidence: You’re comfortable with data, quick to spot when something looks off, and able to explain numbers clearly to anyone.
  • Coding basics: You can build & dissect working code (Python or SQL is plenty) when it’s the right tool for the job, leaving behind clean scripts or models others can actually run.
  • A simplification instinct: You genuinely enjoy taking messy, ambiguous problems and turning them into clean, reliable processes.
  • Curiosity with rigour: You’re keen to leverage modern tools or AI to speed up your workflow, but you have the discipline to double-check and validate every result.
  • Self-starter mindset: You’re comfortable operating autonomously through some ambiguity (our world is changing fast!), but humble enough to raise your hand and ask for help when stuck.
  • A willingness to roll up your sleeves: We’re a lean commercial team in a fast-growing business. You’re ready to pitch in wherever help is needed.
Bonus points if you have
  • Experience in a data-heavy or commercial role (pricing, commercial analysis, finance, operations, consulting, or similar).
  • Energy, markets, or retail experience.
  • A track record of fixing broken things: Proven experience building, taking over, or streamlining a process, tool, or report that was previously messy or manual.
Why you’ll love it here
  • Real autonomy, real ownership, and a team that moves fast and backs each other.
  • A mission you can feel good about — accelerating the shift to a cheaper, greener grid.
  • Being a part part of one of the most impactful and disruptive climate / energy technology companies in the world
  • Equity Options - every Octopus employee owns part of the business. We’re a team, working together towards huge goals. Every person is crucial to our success, you should be rewarded as such.
  • Fully paid medical, dental, andvision insurance for employees & their family.
  • Paid time off — we know working hard means also being able to recharge as needed, we trust our employees to get the work done and take the time they need. We offer 20 days of paid vacation and 8 paid sick days annually.
  • 401(k) plan with employer match. Octopus matches 100% of contributions on the first 3% and 50% of contributions from 3-5%.
  • Parental leave.Biological, adoptive and foster parents are all eligible.
  • Flexible working environment - This team works in our Downtown Houston Office 3 days a week. You need to shift around your schedule? You do you, we genuinely believe in work/life balance.
  • Wondering what the salary for this role is? Just ask us! When on a call with one of our recruiters it’s something we always cover as we genuinely want to match your experience with the correct salary. We always have a degree of flexibility and would never want salary to be a reason why someone doesn’t apply to Octopus - what’s more important to us is finding the right fit!

Studies have shown that some groups of people, like women, are less likely to apply to a role unless they meet 100% of the job requirements. Whoever you are, if you like one of our jobs, we encourage you to apply as you might just be the candidate we hire. Across Octopus, we're looking for genuinely decent people who are honest and empathetic. Our people are our strongest asset and the unique skills and perspectives people bring to the team are the driving force of our success. As an equal opportunity employer, we do not discriminate on the basis of any protected attribute. Our commitment is to provide equal opportunities, an inclusive work environment, and fairness for everyone.
