As of Sep 5, 2026, the average yearly pay for renewable energy certificate in the United States is $58,090.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $49,000.00 and $57,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a renewable energy certificate (REC)?

A Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) is a market-based instrument that represents the property rights to the environmental, social, and other non-power attributes of renewable electricity generation. When one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity is generated and delivered to the grid from a renewable energy resource, one REC is created. RECs provide a mechanism for individuals and companies to support renewable energy generation and claim usage of renewable energy, even if they cannot directly consume it. They are often used to meet regulatory requirements or voluntary sustainability goals.

What are the typical daily responsibilities for professionals managing renewable energy certificates (RECs)?

Professionals handling Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) typically focus on monitoring renewable energy production data, verifying compliance with regulatory standards, and maintaining accurate records of certificate issuance and transfers. Their daily tasks often include coordinating with renewable energy producers, utility companies, and regulatory bodies to ensure proper documentation and reporting. Additionally, they may analyze market trends, assist in trading activities, and provide guidance on REC portfolio management to support organizational sustainability goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a renewable energy certificate (REC) specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) Specialist, you need a solid understanding of renewable energy markets, regulatory compliance, and environmental policies, often supported by a degree in environmental science, energy management, or a related field. Familiarity with REC tracking systems, energy management software, and relevant certification programs such as LEED or Green-e is typically required. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication abilities help individuals excel when managing complex data and stakeholder interactions. These skills ensure accurate REC tracking, regulatory adherence, and effective promotion of renewable energy initiatives.

What is the difference between Renewable Energy Certificate vs Renewable Energy Analyst?

Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) are market-based instruments representing proof that 1 MWh of renewable energy has been generated. Renewable Energy Analysts evaluate market trends, analyze data, and support renewable energy projects. While RECs are certificates traded to promote renewable energy, Analysts focus on assessing market conditions and project viability. Both roles are integral to the renewable energy industry but serve different functions.

Are renewable energy certificates effective?

Renewable energy certificates (RECs) are effective tools for tracking and certifying the generation of renewable energy, allowing organizations to support clean energy production and meet sustainability goals. They provide a transparent way to demonstrate renewable energy use, but their effectiveness depends on proper verification and market integrity. Jobs in this field often involve understanding REC markets, environmental policies, and renewable energy systems.

How to become a certified renewable energy certificate professional?

To become a certified renewable energy certificate professional, individuals typically need a background in renewable energy, environmental science, or related fields, along with relevant experience. Certification programs are offered by industry organizations such as the Center for Resource Solutions or the North American Renewable Energy Certificate Association, which often require passing exams and demonstrating knowledge of renewable energy markets and regulations.

What can you do with a renewable energy certificate?

A renewable energy certificate (REC) certifies that one megawatt-hour of renewable energy has been generated and added to the grid. It can be sold or traded to businesses or individuals seeking to offset their carbon footprint or meet renewable energy goals, and is often used in sustainability reporting and compliance programs.

What jobs can you get with a renewable energy certificate?

A renewable energy certificate (REC) can help qualify individuals for jobs in the renewable energy sector, such as solar or wind energy technician, project developer, energy analyst, or sustainability coordinator. These roles often require knowledge of renewable energy systems, environmental regulations, and sometimes certifications or technical training. Having a REC demonstrates commitment to renewable energy, which can enhance job prospects in these fields.
