What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote WOCN (Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurse), and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote WOCN, you need expertise in wound, ostomy, and continence care, supported by an RN license and WOCN certification. Familiarity with telehealth platforms, electronic health records (EHRs), and digital assessment tools is crucial for effective remote care delivery. Exceptional communication, critical thinking, and patient education skills help build rapport and ensure adherence to care plans. These competencies are vital for delivering high-quality, specialized care to patients remotely while maintaining safety and positive outcomes.

How does a Remote WOCN (Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurse) effectively collaborate with on-site clinical teams to ensure optimal patient care?

As a Remote WOCN, you will regularly communicate with on-site clinical staff through video calls, secure messaging, and electronic health records to assess patients, provide consultations, and develop care plans. Collaboration often involves reviewing photos or videos of wounds, offering real-time recommendations, and educating bedside nurses on best practices. Building strong relationships with the local team and maintaining clear, timely communication are essential for achieving the best patient outcomes and ensuring continuity of care.

What are Remote WOCNs?

Remote WOCNs, or remote Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurses, are specialized nurses who provide expert care and consultation for patients with wound, ostomy, and continence issues through telehealth platforms. They assess patient needs, develop care plans, offer education, and support both patients and healthcare providers from a remote location, often using video calls or digital communication tools. This approach increases access to specialized care, especially for patients in rural or underserved areas, while maintaining high standards of clinical guidance and support.

Overview:
Sentara is hiring a Wound Care RN for the Innovative Inpatient Care Model in the Brand-New Centralized Virtual Acute Care Department.
This position is NOT Remote and is located at the Sentara Independence office in Virginia Beach, VA.
Leverage the use of technology to enhance patient care in the hospital and provide support to nurses at the bedside. Virtual RNs can support the team at the bedside to alleviate the workload and provide greater satisfaction for both the patients and the nursing staff. They handle administrative tasks that take significant time but don't require hands-on care. This improves workflow while ensuring patients are fully informed about the care they have received.
Virtual nurses are not a replacement for bedside nurses, instead they serve as an additional member of the hospital care team. Bedside nurses and virtual nurses work together to ensure that patients continue to receive the safest and highest quality of care. Patients communicate with virtual nurses via a HIPAA compliant audio-visual device in the hospital room.
Perform nursing duties via video call with this innovative care model from the Virtual Care hub call center such as admissions, discharges, patient teaching, medication reconciliation, and much more.
