What is a remote wireless network engineer?

Remote Wireless Network Engineers are IT professionals who design, implement, manage, and troubleshoot wireless networks from a remote location. They work with technologies such as Wi-Fi, cellular, and other wireless communication systems to ensure secure and reliable network connectivity for organizations. Their responsibilities often include configuring network hardware, optimizing wireless coverage, monitoring network performance, and addressing security concerns, all while providing support remotely. These engineers use specialized software tools and remote access solutions to manage networks without being physically present on-site.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote wireless network engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Wireless Network Engineer, you need a solid background in wireless networking protocols, RF engineering, and a relevant degree such as in computer science, information technology, or electrical engineering. Familiarity with tools like Cisco Prime, Ekahau, Wireshark, and certifications such as CWNA or Cisco CCNP Wireless are typically required. Strong problem-solving, self-motivation, and effective communication skills help you manage projects and collaborate with distributed teams. These skills are crucial to ensure secure, reliable wireless network performance and successful support of users and infrastructure from a remote setting.

What are some common challenges faced by remote wireless network engineers, and how can they be overcome?

Remote Wireless Network Engineers often face challenges such as troubleshooting connectivity issues without on-site access, coordinating with local teams for hardware interventions, and ensuring network security across distributed environments. Overcoming these challenges typically involves using advanced remote monitoring tools, maintaining clear communication with on-site staff, and staying updated with the latest security protocols. Strong problem-solving skills and adaptability are essential, as is proactive documentation to streamline remote collaboration and minimize downtime.

  • Design and build network telemetry, monitoring, and observability

  • Make and collaborate on key decisions regarding the evolution of our infrastructure, such as our hybrid cloud architecture

  • Be  responsible for liaising with third parties, vendors and internet service providers as well as traveling to our Bay Area and New Jersey data centers and offices for onsite networking projects

This role could be a fit if you have:
  • Proficiency with automation technology including Terraform, Ansible, and Chef

  • Proficiency with at least one language such as Go, Python, or Ruby and configuration management tools such as Git

  • Demonstrated experience with Linux systems

  • Experience with automating production data center environments, including hardware provisioning, network device configuration, and capacity planning

  • Proficiency with Networking protocols such as BGP, MLAG, VLANs, DNS

  • Excellent communications and organizational skills

  • BS or MS in Engineering or Computer Science or related field, or equivalent professional experience

Strong candidate may also have:
  • Experience with routing and switching in data centers

  • Familiarity with Palo Alto Networks Firewalls, Juniper switches

  • Background on VPN technologies, like OpenVPN, IPSec, TLS

  • Experience with AWS Networking technologies  like Direct Connect, NACLs, Security Groups, VPC, etc

Once you join, Wealthfront will:
  • Provide you with a mentor who who will support you in your onboarding journey

  • Encourage you to lead impactful projects that match your professional goals

  • Support your professional development by providing feedback during weekly 1:1s and our bi-annual reviews

  • Provide autonomy so you can be a happy and successful member of our team

Estimated annual salary range: $172,000 - $228,000 plus equity and a discretionary bonus.

Benefits include medical, vision, dental, 401K plan, generous time off, parental leave, wellness reimbursements, professional development, employee investing discount, and more!
