Remote Web Programmer information

What is a remote web programmer?

A remote web programmer is a professional who writes, tests, and maintains the code that powers websites and web applications, while working from a location outside a traditional office—often from home. They use programming languages like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and backend languages such as Python, PHP, or Ruby to build and enhance websites. Remote web programmers collaborate with team members through online tools and are responsible for ensuring websites are functional, responsive, and secure. This role typically requires strong technical skills, self-motivation, and effective communication in virtual environments.

How do remote web programmers typically collaborate with team members across different time zones?

Remote Web Programmers often work with globally distributed teams, which requires effective communication and collaboration strategies. They commonly use project management tools (like Jira or Trello), version control systems (such as Git), and communication platforms (like Slack or Zoom) to stay connected. To manage time zone differences, many teams schedule overlapping 'core hours' for meetings and utilize detailed documentation to keep everyone aligned. Adapting to asynchronous work and proactively sharing progress updates is essential for smooth teamwork in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote web programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Web Programmer, you need strong proficiency in web development languages (such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript), frameworks (like React or Angular), and a solid understanding of software engineering principles, typically supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git), cloud platforms, and project management tools (such as Jira or Trello) is commonly required. Excellent time management, self-motivation, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for succeeding in a remote environment. These skills and qualities enable you to deliver high-quality, maintainable code while collaborating efficiently with distributed teams.

Job description

Yelp engineering culture is driven by our values: we’re a cooperative team that values individual authenticity and encourages creative solutions to problems. All new engineers deploy working code their first week, and we strive to broaden individual impact with support from managers, mentors, and teams. At the end of the day, we’re all about helping our users, growing as engineers, and having fun in a collaborative environment.

Yelp's Chat Platform team powers the Yelp Assistant on Android, iOS, and Web. The team builds chat-native product experiences that go beyond text: visual, interactive elements composed in real time through Server Driven UI. The platform serves millions of users with low latency and high reliability while meeting safety and privacy standards.

As an entry level Full Stack Engineer on Chat Platform, you will contribute to the infrastructure that generates and delivers these experiences. This includes building Server Driven UI components, extending streaming APIs, integrating with chat intelligence services, and instrumenting the platform for reliability and observability. You will be expected to write clean, well-tested code across Python and TypeScript, ship features end-to-end from backend to client SDK, and work alongside experienced engineers who will help you build depth in real-time systems and platform design.

This is a strong fit for engineers early in their careers who want to build deep full-stack and real-time systems skills, working on infrastructure that ships directly to millions of users.

This opportunity is fully remote and does not require you to be located in any particular area in Canada. We welcome applicants from throughout Canada. We’d love to have you apply, even if you don’t feel you meet every single requirement in this posting. At Yelp, we’re looking for great people, not just those who simply check off all the boxes.

  • Build and extend Server Driven UI components that render chat experiences dynamically across Android, iOS, and Web

  • Write, test, and ship production-grade code in Python and TypeScript across the chat platform stack

  • Contribute to streaming APIs and client SDKs that deliver real-time chat interactions to consumers and businesses

  • Partner with chat features and chat intelligence teams to translate emerging product requirements into platform capabilities

  • Instrument chat flows with metrics, logging, tracing, and alerting to maintain reliability at scale

  • Participate in code reviews, on-call rotations, and incident response to build operational instincts over time

  • Investigate production issues and contribute fixes across a complex system spanning multiple services and client surfaces

  • BS in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience

  • Proficiency in Python and TypeScript

  • Strong software engineering fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, system design, and a commitment to writing clean, tested, maintainable code

  • Familiarity solid understanding of client-server architecture

  • Ability to ramp quickly on an unfamiliar codebase and ask good questions

  • Clear written and verbal communication; the team works cross-functionally with Product, Design, and Data Science and documents its decisions

  • Interest in real-time systems, streaming protocols, or platform/infrastructure work

  • As part of the final panel interview for this role, you’ll complete a coding exercise using React and Flask in a code repository platform. The code repo platform offers an optional AI chatbot for syntax lookups and clarifying questions during the exercise.
