Remote Visual Merchandising Designer information

What is a remote visual merchandising designer?

A Remote Visual Merchandising Designer is a creative professional who plans and designs the visual presentation of products in retail environments, but works from a remote location instead of on-site. They use digital tools to develop store layouts, window displays, and product arrangements that attract customers and enhance brand image. Collaboration with store teams, marketing departments, and other designers is typically done through virtual meetings and digital platforms. Their work helps improve customer experience and boost sales, all while providing the flexibility to work from anywhere.

How does a remote visual merchandising designer effectively collaborate with in-store teams and stakeholders while working off-site?

Remote Visual Merchandising Designers typically rely on strong communication tools, such as video calls, collaborative design platforms, and regular check-ins, to stay aligned with in-store teams and stakeholders. They often share digital mockups, mood boards, and detailed guidelines to ensure their concepts are clearly understood and accurately executed on the sales floor. Building relationships and maintaining open lines of feedback are crucial, as effective collaboration ensures brand consistency and timely project delivery, despite not being physically present. Adaptability and proactive communication are key to overcoming the challenges of remote work in this creative, fast-paced environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote visual merchandising designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Visual Merchandising Designer, you need a strong background in design principles, spatial planning, and retail merchandising, typically supported by a degree in visual merchandising, interior design, or a related field. Proficiency with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, SketchUp, and remote collaboration tools is essential. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective virtual communication are standout soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities enable designers to create engaging, cohesive retail displays that drive sales and brand identity, even when working remotely.

Job description

The National Multimedia Journalist (MMJ) is a digital-first storyteller responsible for producing high-impact weather and news content across social, digital, and network platforms.ย

The MMJย operatesย as a fully independent content producer - responsible for pitching, shooting, writing, editing, and delivering content with speed and accuracy, often withoutย additionalย field or production support.ย Success in this role depends on the ability to prioritize visual storytelling in the field, capture compelling video under pressure, and quickly turn that content into digital-first stories.ย

Approximately 80% of the role is focused on digital production from a home base, with 20% dedicated to field deployment during severe weather and major weather-related events.ย

This position is remote but must be based in the Northeast Corridor. Candidates must reside, or be willing to relocate, to Washington D.C., Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, or Massachusetts and have reasonable access to a major commercial airport.

Field assignments are high-intensity and may involve multiple consecutive days in the field, long hours (often 12-16+ hour days), and rapidly changing conditions during active weather or disaster coverage. The frequency and duration of these deployments are driven by weather patterns and can vary throughout the year.ย Deployments are oftenย determinedย quickly, may require short-notice travel, and require immediate availability.ย

This position plays a critical role in AccuWeather's strategy to lead coverage during high-impact weather and consistently produce engaging digital content year-round.ย

ย KEY RESPONSIBILITIESย

  • Produce digital-first video content designed for social and mobile platforms, prioritizing strong hooks, clear storytelling, and high engagementย
  • Pitch and develop original story ideas aligned with daily digital priorities and content categoriesย
  • Shoot, write, and edit video independently using Adobe Premiere, delivering both short-form and long-form contentย
  • Operate as a solo field reporter during severe weather and breaking news events, capturing b-roll, conducting interviews, and delivering live or recorded reportsย
  • Be available for rapid deployment during severe weather eventsย and breaking news coverage, often with little advance notice, and deliver content under tight timelines in dynamic field conditionsย and work extended hours in the fieldย
  • Prioritize capturing compelling, real-time visuals in the field, including storm footage, damage, and human impactย
  • Turn quick-hit digital videos under tight deadlines, as well as fully produced packages (60-120 seconds)ย
  • Conduct on-the-ground interviews and produce character-driven storytelling from impacted communitiesย
  • Adapt content for multiple platforms, including vertical, square, and horizontal formatsย
  • Collaborate with producers, editors, and the digital team to refine content for performance and accuracyย
  • Contribute to daily digital workflows, including pitch deadlines, script approvals, and delivery timelinesย
  • Maintain strong editorial judgment and uphold AccuWeather standards for accuracy and clarityย
  • Perform other duties as assignedย

ย  QUALIFICATIONSย

Requiredย

  • BA or BS from accredited university in journalism, communications and/or meteorology preferredย
  • 3-5+ years of experience as a multimedia journalist, video producer, or digital content creator
  • Portfolio demonstrating digital-first video work, including on-camera reporting samples, self-shot and self-edited content, storytelling, and field coverage. Candidates should clearly indicate which samples were shot, edited, and reported by them
  • Comfortable appearing on camera and delivering live or recorded reports from the field
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Premiere (non-negotiable)ย
  • Demonstrated ability to shoot and edit video independently in the fieldย
  • Experience producing content specifically for digital and social platformsย
  • Strong understanding of visual storytelling and how to capture compelling video in real-time situations
  • Ability to work independently under pressure and meet fast turnaround deadlinesย
  • Willingness to travelย frequentlyย (up to 50%) and deploy quickly to breaking weather eventsย
  • Valid driver's licenseย

Preferredย

  • Experience covering severe weather or breaking newsย
  • Familiarity with meteorology or strong interest in weather storytellingย
  • Experience with live reporting and live streaming toolsย
  • FAA Part 107 drone certification (or willingness to obtain)ย

Skills & Competenciesย

  • Digital-first storytelling mindset (understands how to "win the first 3 seconds")ย
  • Strong editorial judgment and ability toย identifyย high-impact stories quicklyย
  • Ability to balance speed with accuracyย
  • Ability toย identifyย and capture the most compelling visual moment in fast-moving situationsย
  • Self-sufficient and solutions-oriented in the fieldย ย
  • Clear, conversational writing styleย optimizedย for mobile viewingย
  • Comfortable working in high-pressure, rapidly changing environments ย
