Administrative Law Judge (Remote)
Location: Remote (Agency HQ: 1802 West Jackson #100, Phoenix, AZ 85007)

Job Type: Contract / Staff Augmentation (Full-Time, 40 hrs/week)

Contract Duration: ~5 Months (Projected Start: August 10, 2026 โ€“ December 31, 2026)

Schedule: Monday โ€“ Friday, 8:00 AM โ€“ 5:00 PM (AZ Time Zone)

Position Overview

SunSoftOnline is seeking qualified Administrative Law Judges (ALJs) to join our team supporting the Office of Inspector General (OIG) within the Arizona Department of Economic Security (AZDES).

In this fully remote role, you will preside over administrative hearings regarding public assistance benefit appeals, unemployment insurance, or related administrative disputes. You will evaluate testimony and evidence, ensure due process, interpret state and federal statutes, and issue clear, written legal decisions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Preside Over Hearings: Conduct fair, impartial administrative hearings via teleconference or video conferencing platforms.

  • Evidence Evaluation: Review case files, administer oaths, analyze documentary evidence, and evaluate witness testimony in accordance with administrative rules and rules of evidence.

  • Legal Research & Writing: Interpret relevant state statutes, federal regulations, and agency policy to draft sound, legally binding written findings of fact, conclusions of law, and final decisions.

  • Case Management: Maintain efficient case flow, adhere to statutory deadlines, and accurately document proceeding notes in electronic tracking systems.

  • Maintain Order: Ensure due process and procedural fairness for all participating parties while managing hearing dynamics professionally.

Qualifications & Requirements
Required Qualifications:
  • Education: Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.

  • Bar Admission: Active license to practice law in good standing (Arizona State Bar preferred, or valid state bar license with administrative law experience).

  • Legal Experience: Minimum of 2โ€“3+ years of experience conducting administrative hearings, practicing law, or drafting judicial/administrative decisions.

  • Technical Skills: Proficiency with remote hearing tools (MS Teams/Zoom), word processing, and electronic case management systems.

Preferred Skills:
  • Prior experience as an Administrative Law Judge, Hearing Officer, or Arbitrator for a government or state agency (e.g., DES, AHCCCS, or similar).

  • Knowledge of Arizona administrative law, public assistance programs, or unemployment insurance regulations.
