Remote User Interface Tester information

What is a remote user interface tester?

A Remote User Interface (UI) Tester is a professional who evaluates the usability, functionality, and visual design of software interfaces from a remote location. They test websites, mobile apps, or software products to ensure that users can interact with them easily and efficiently. Remote UI Testers identify issues, provide feedback on user experience, and help developers improve the overall quality of digital products. This role typically involves using various testing tools, reporting bugs, and collaborating with development teams, all while working outside of a traditional office setting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote user interface tester?

To thrive as a Remote User Interface Tester, you need strong attention to detail, knowledge of UI/UX principles, and experience with software testing methodologies, often supported by a background in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with testing tools like Selenium, BrowserStack, or Jira, as well as certification such as ISTQB, is typically expected. Excellent communication, analytical thinking, and problem-solving abilities help testers provide clear feedback and collaborate effectively with development teams. These skills ensure interfaces are intuitive, functional, and meet user expectations, which is crucial for delivering high-quality digital products.

How do remote user interface testers typically collaborate with development teams while working offsite?

Remote User Interface Testers often work closely with developers, designers, and project managers using collaboration tools like Slack, Jira, and video conferencing platforms. They participate in daily stand-ups, provide feedback on UI issues, and log bugs or suggestions through project management systems. Clear, written communication and regular virtual meetings are essential for staying aligned with the team and ensuring UI quality standards are met. Despite working remotely, testers are expected to be proactive in seeking clarifications and sharing test results promptly.

Job description

About Windscribe

Windscribe is a leading cyber security and privacy company launched in April 2016 and now with more than 70 million users. We believe that the internet was created so that people across the globe could have access to any type of information, no matter where they are. Our mission is to transform the internet with easy-to-use yet powerful privacy and security tools that allow anyone to circumvent censorship, access geographically restricted content, and minimize their exposure to marketers, criminals, and surveillance dragnets. Our well-received applications have appeared on Lifehacker, Techradar, and CNET.

Headquartered in Toronto, Canada, Windscribe operates two products:

  • Windscribe is a suite of privacy, anonymity and anti-censorship tools for the masses.
  • Control D is a modern and customizable DNS service that blocks threats, unwanted content and ads - on all devices. Onboard in minutes, and forget about it.

We have infrastructure all over the world and our goal is preserving uncensored Internet access and online privacy for all. Right now we are looking for a Site Reliability Engineer to help us tame DNS.

About the Position

Reporting to the Frontend Engineering Manager, you'll work closely with the design, frontend engineering, and product teams to create intuitive, delightful, and self-documenting user experiences across Windscribe and, later, Control D. Your mission is to make the flows in our apps intuitive, delightful, and self-documenting, so people understand how to use our products without needing a manual.

Desired Outcomes
  • User flows are clear, logical, and require no external explanation to complete
  • Interaction states (loading, empty, error, success, edge cases) are fully designed and consistent
  • Flows are validated against real usage and accessible to all stakeholders
  • Friction, dead ends, and confusion points are proactively found and removed
  • New tools and methods are adopted to improve flow quality, efficiency, and productivity
Responsibilities
  • Design, map, and iterate end-to-end user flows across web, desktop, and mobile
  • Turn complex or technical features into simple, guided experiences
  • Design every state of a flow, not just the happy path - errors, empty states, permissions, edge cases
  • Prototype interactions and pressure-test them before handoff
  • Review live products and features for usability gaps and propose improvements
  • Continuously review competitor products and flows for ideas and benchmarks
  • Communicate clearly and rationally to explain flow and interaction decisions
  • Work with the wider team to address questions and resolve issues in a timely manner
Qualifications
  • Proactive, self-motivated, and open to feedback
  • Genuinely cares about craft and getting the details right
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Always on the lookout for flows and interactions to improve
  • Excellent verbal and written English
  • Leading and contributing to scope/flow definition in issues and epics
  • Clear, concise communication that conveys ownership and accountability - especially when problems, issues, or incidents occur
  • Comfortable working closely with engineers and translating between design and implementation
  • Proven experience designing user flows and interactions for web, desktop, and mobile. Previous experience in the gaming or video production industries would be very interesting.
  • Strong information architecture and interaction design fundamentals (navigation, hierarchy, feedback, affordances)

Experience

  • Proven experience as a UX Designer for 5+ years
  • Skilled at sketching, wireframing, and building interactive prototypes
  • Ability to review and assess usability, UX, and product quality
  • Considers research, feedback, and technical constraints in decisions
  • Proficient in Figma
  • Experience working in an Agile development process
  • An eye for microcopy and onboarding cues that make interfaces self-explanatory
  • Ability to work within and improve an established brand and design system
Nice to Have
  • Familiarity with privacy, security, or networking products
  • Basic understanding of frontend implementation (HTML/CSS or component-based UI)
  • Experience running lightweight usability tests

Compensation

  • Remote position: Canada only but you MUST reside in the Eastern Time Zone within easy reach of the Toronto office so that you can get together for face time and social gatherings with the team regularly
  • Salary range: CAD $95,000–$125,000
