Job description

Uber is changing the world, and we're looking for a Counsel on Uber's Privacy & Cybersecurity Legal team to help us do it. This role will work closely with teams throughout Uber, including others in Legal, Product, DPO office, Security and Engineering, to build privacy into our products and features, drive compliance with data protection laws globally, and maintain a culture of privacy within Uber. 

What you'll do

  • Advise Uber product and engineering teams regarding data privacy and cybersecurity requirements, best practices, and Uber's Privacy Principles 
  • Drive privacy-by-design and -default throughout Uber's product development process
  • Track and research developments relating to new and pending laws that impact Uber's privacy and cybersecurity program, including U.S. state laws and the EU's GDPR, AI Act, and Platform Work Directive; translate that into practical, effective advice; and lead compliance efforts relating to these laws 
  • Negotiate privacy requirements in third-party agreements
  • Create and present engaging company-wide trainings regarding data privacy and security requirements and standard methodologies
  • Drive awareness regarding cutting-edge legal and business developments, including regarding use of AI and machine learning, and lead team efficiency, morale and collaboration efforts   
  • Contribute to our ongoing mission to make magic in the marketplace, and drive Uber's efforts to be a trusted steward of our users' personal data in every market where Uber operates

Basic qualifications 

  • Minimum of five years (5) years of legal experience in private practice, in-house and/or government.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience within privacy and/or cybersecurity law.
  • J.D. and license to practice law in at least one U.S. state.

Preferred qualifications 

  • Technology company lawyer with a range of knowledge and experience across the substantive legal areas relevant to privacy, data security and AI.
  • Proficient in global privacy and data security requirements, particularly GDPR and U.S. state privacy laws. 
  • Experience counseling product and engineering teams.
  • Excited to work in a fast-paced environment where innovating through cutting-edge legal issues is the norm.
  • Collaborative, thoughtful, passionate about your work, and good sense of humor.
  • CIPP certification 
  • Strong interpersonal skills, highly collaborative with business leaders and cross-functional partners, and a strong ability to build relationships, gain credibility, and partner with others.
  • Self-motivation with a strong affinity for vision setting, strategic problem solving, and driving action.
  • Excellent business judgment and great communication skills.

For Chicago, IL-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD $187,000 per year - USD $208,000 per year.


For New York City, NY-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD $208,000 per year - USD $231,000 per year.


For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD $208,000 per year - USD $231,000 per year.


For Seattle, WA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD $187,000 per year - USD $208,000 per year.


For Washington, DC-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD $208,000 per year - USD $231,000 per year.


For all US locations, you will be eligible to participate in Uber's bonus program, and may be offered an equity award & other types of comp. All full-time employees are eligible to participate in a 401(k) plan. You will also be eligible for various benefits.
