Job Description

Location: Boston, MA, with travel to all NBA cities
Position Type: Freelance, limited-term project with an estimated duration of up to seven months, subject to amendment or early termination upon completion of deliverables
Travel: Approximately 50 to 60 percent

Position Summary

The Broadcast Director leads the live, on-air production of Boston Celtics basketball games, directing camera operators, the technical director, EVS operators, and audio staff to deliver broadcast-quality game coverage. Working alongside the game producer, the Director makes real-time decisions on camera selection, replays, and graphics integration, turning the action on the court into a compelling television experience for viewers at home.

Home games are produced from the mobile truck in Boston- all crew on site. The road games are hybrid with a split crew.  For road games, the Director is the sole NBC Sports Boston production staff member traveling to site. He serves as the point of contact for the visiting crew and truck staff.  The road games go through a remote control room in Boston where the producer, graphics operator, scorebox operator, and lead EVS are based.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Direct all Boston Celtics home and road game broadcasts, calling camera shots and managing smooth transitions between segments throughout each show.
  • Partner with the game producer to establish visual style, pacing, camera coverage, show rundowns, storyline selection, and graphics or feature packages.
  • Direct EVS operators on instant replays and highlight selection that reinforce the narrative of each game.
  • Coordinate with play-by-play and analyst talent to integrate commentary, interviews, and in-game analysis into the broadcast.
  • Travel with road gear to all visiting venues and serve as the on-site point person for the visiting crew and truck staff.
  • Work with engineering and production staff to maintain technical standards across every broadcast.
  • Mentor and help develop newer crew members to strengthen the pool of qualified production professionals.
  • Direct additional live event programming as assigned.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • A minimum of seven years of related broadcast production experience, including three to five years directing multi-camera live event programming in both control room and remote production environments.
  • Demonstrated experience directing basketball broadcasts.
  • Strong working knowledge of remote production trucks and their associated workflows.
  • Proven ability to lead on-site and remote crews in a respectful, collaborative manner.
  • Willingness to adopt new technologies and workflows as they are introduced.
  • Valid driver’s license in good standing for the state of residence.
  • Willingness to submit to a background investigation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior NBA directing experience.
  • Additional sports production background beyond basketball.

Work Schedule, Travel, and Physical Requirements

  • Available for all scheduled games, with the flexibility to adjust to a fluid NBA schedule throughout the season.
  • Willingness to work in Boston, MA and travel to all NBA cities; travel is required for roughly 50 to 60 percent of the role.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces typical of remote production trucks.

Required On-Site: This position is required to be performed full-time from an NBCUniversal-designated worksite.

Compensation: The daily rate for this position is $ 1400 - 1600 per day.
