The Underwriting Technical Consultant will serve as a senior technical authority, providing technical expertise on complex and high-severity risks across multiple product lines. This role owns key underwriting strategies, drives business initiatives with cross-functional impact, and directly mentor managers while indirectly guiding underwriters to elevate organizational capability and performance. The Underwriting Technical Consultant is accountable for guiding best practices that influence underwriting portfolio profitability.

We are seeking candidates who reside within our footprint: North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Tennessee, Mississippi, and the Florida areas. This remote role will allow you to do your best work from your home office, collaborating virtually with your team daily.You will travel to our Raleigh office for meetings and company events up to four times a year.

YourWORKas an Underwriting Technical Consultant will make a differenceas you:

  • Serve as the primary referral and technical expert on complex risks, portfolios, and emerging underwriting issues, ensuring compliance with company policies and strategic objectives.
  • Lead and influence the refinement of underwriting guidelines, practices, and rating processes to ensure consistency and profitability.
  • Partner with actuarial, product, analytics, and claims departments to evaluate business results, identify opportunities, and recommend changes that improve performance and profitability.
  • Monitor line of business performance and competitive trends, proactively addressing challenges and recommending adjustments to achieve growth and profit objectives.
  • Drive underwriting input into product development, pricing models, and technology initiatives, ensuring tools and systems support effective risk selection and decision-making.
  • Partner with Training and UW Managers to develop and deliver technical training programs to focus on technical underwriting development and skill enhancement.
  • Influence leadership through actionable insights, ensuring underwriter and manager expertise supports the long-term underwriting strategy.
  • Assume lead responsibility in underwriting audits, quality reviews, and compliance assessments to evaluate adherence to company guidelines and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Establish and monitor underwriting performance metrics, dashboards, and reporting to drive accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Evaluate emerging tools and technologies from a technical underwriting perspective, validating business usability, calibration, and alignment to underwriting workflows.
  • Participate in industry forums and peer groups to represent the company, build market presence, and provide perspective on external trends impacting underwriting.

Skillsto get the JOB done RIGHT:

  • Bachelor's degree (Business, Risk, Insurance, or related) with 10 years of commercial lines underwriting or product experience, including exposure to complex risk handling or technical underwriting or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Broad technical expertise across Property and Casualty products, with a deep understanding of risk selection, pricing models, loss trends, and portfolio management.
  • Strong experience collaborating with actuarial, product development, analytics, claims, and technology teams.
  • Excellent analytical, technical, and communication skills with the ability to simplify complexity and drive impact.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence at all organizational levels, including underwriting leaders and managers.
  • Proven ability to train, coach, and mentor underwriters and leaders, raising technical capability organization-wide.
