What is a remote UI developer?

Remote UI developers are professionals who design and implement user interfaces for websites or applications while working from a location outside the traditional office environment. They use front-end technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks such as React or Angular to create interactive and visually appealing user experiences. Working remotely, they collaborate with teams through digital communication tools, manage code repositories online, and often have flexible schedules. Remote UI developers need strong communication and time-management skills to be effective in a distributed work setting.

What does a remote UI developer do?

As a remote UI developer, you work from home to design the front-end of web applications. Your responsibilities center around creating a smooth user interface. UI and UX typically go hand in hand for developers. You translate wireframes to actual code for the visual elements of an application, work with graphic designers to implement their designs, and ensure the app is easy to use. Optimizing the speed and scalability of the app is also part of your responsibilities as a remote UI developer. This job requires you to work in tandem with back-end developers as well.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote UI developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote UI Developer, you need strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and UI design principles, typically supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with frameworks like React or Angular, version control systems like Git, and responsive design tools is commonly required. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and problem-solving skills help you stand out, especially in a remote work environment. These skills are crucial for delivering high-quality user interfaces, collaborating effectively across distributed teams, and ensuring project success.

How do remote UI developers typically collaborate with design and backend teams to ensure seamless project delivery?

Remote UI Developers often use collaborative tools like Slack, Jira, and Figma to communicate effectively with design and backend teams. Regular virtual meetings, design hand-off sessions, and code reviews are essential to keep everyone aligned and address potential issues early. Working remotely requires proactive communication and clear documentation to bridge any gaps caused by physical distance. By participating in agile sprints and daily stand-ups, Remote UI Developers help ensure that user interface components integrate smoothly with backend services and match the intended design specifications.

What is the difference between Remote Ui Developer vs Remote Front End Developer?

AspectRemote Ui DeveloperRemote Front End Developer
Required SkillsUI design, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, UX principlesHTML, CSS, JavaScript, frameworks like React or Angular
Work EnvironmentDesign-focused, user interface creationCode-focused, building interactive web applications
Industry UsageDesign agencies, tech companies, startupsTech firms, software companies, digital agencies

While both roles involve front-end skills, a Remote Ui Developer primarily focuses on designing and implementing user interfaces with an emphasis on aesthetics and user experience. In contrast, a Remote Front End Developer concentrates on coding and developing functional, interactive web applications. The roles often overlap, but the UI Developer leans more toward design, whereas the Front End Developer emphasizes coding and functionality.

Director of UX
Department: UI/UX
Employment Type: Full Time
Location: US
Reporting To: Jonathan Abbett
Compensation: $180,000 - $230,000 / year
Description
Newfire Global Partners is a leading technology firm that specializes in building transformative software solutions for some of the world's most innovative companies. With a presence across four continents, Newfire Global brings deep expertise in digital healthcare, AI-driven analytics, and enterprise technology. The firm's track record of delivering scalable, high-impact solutions has made it a trusted partner for organizations seeking to drive meaningful change through technology.
We are passionate about the purpose-driven mission to help improve the quality of care for patients and are building a collaborative, innovative, and inclusive culture. We are a fully funded company founded by serial entrepreneurs with a stable client base.
Opportunity for impact
Newfire Global Partners, a leader in developing disruptive healthcare technology, collaborates with Fortune 500 companies and start-ups to drive transformation.
We're seeking an experienced Director of User Experience to lead our embedded UX team serving a major healthcare technology client. In this role, you'll manage a growing team of UX professionals (currently 2 researchers and 5 designers) who work as the in-house UX function for a mid-sized, early-stage healthcare technology organization serving the health insurance market.
This is a high-impact leadership role where you'll drive design excellence, build strategic relationships with product and engineering leadership, and create the conditions for your team to do their best work. You'll report to our VP of User Experience and serve as the operational owner of the team - the connective tissue between strategy and delivery - while also rolling up your sleeves on critique, coaching, and day-to-day quality.
Role & responsibilities
  • Provide hands-on management, coaching, and mentorship to 2 UX researchers and 5 senior designers
  • Conduct design and research critique, ensuring high-quality outputs across all projects
  • Review and approve research & design plans
  • Lead performance development and team growth
  • Foster a collaborative, supportive team culture where everyone feels set up for success
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with Product directors and Engineering directors
  • Work directly with the VP of Product on roadmap planning and UX prioritization
  • Collaborate with the VP of User Experience on overall UX strategy and practice evolution
  • Represent UX in cross-functional planning and decision-making
  • Participate in quarterly business reviews with client leadership
  • Adapt and maintain systems that give leadership and clients real-time visibility into team activity, project assignments, and deliverables
  • Manage project tracking system to provide real-time visibility into team workload and progress
  • Ensure consistent design quality across multiple concurrent projects in Care Management and Utilization Management feature areas
  • Optimize team workflows to increase design throughput and reduce time-to-test and time-to-delivery
  • Navigate roadmap changes and ambiguity, helping the team stay productive despite shifting priorities
  • Facilitate team rituals including weekly team meetings and twice-weekly critique sessions
  • Coach the team to navigate their collaborations with product management independently, while stepping in to remove blockers that require your seniority
  • Partner with Product on the shared product development lifecycle, from discovery through design and into build

You're a Perfect Match If You Have:
    • 5+ years in UX leadership roles, including experience as a Director or equivalent
    • Proven experience managing teams of 5-10 UX professionals, including both designers and researchers
    • Deep expertise in complex enterprise software for healthcare (experience with health insurance/payer systems strongly preferred)
    • Track record of success in an in-house product organization or deeply embedded consulting role
    • Experience managing geographically distributed or offshore teams
    • Demonstrated ability to build influential relationships with senior product and engineering leaders
    • Expert at design critique and providing actionable feedback that elevates quality
    • Strong facilitator who can drive alignment across cross-functional teams
    • Process-oriented with a toolkit of best practices ready to apply
    • Comfortable operating in ambiguous, fast-changing environments
    • Excellent at coaching UX professionals to grow their skills and impact
    • Experienced in research oversight and translating insights into design direction
    • Proactive problem-solver who removes obstacles for their team
    • Collaborative leader who builds trust and psychological safety
    • Results-driven with a focus on both delivery and team wellbeing
    • Passionate about healthcare and improving experiences for users in complex domains
    • Location: Fully remote; must be US-based, ideally in Eastern Time Zone (Boston area preferred)
    • Reports to: VP of User Experience
    • Team size: 7 direct reports (structure may evolve)
    • Travel: Some travel to Boston HQ or occasionally customer sites
