What are Remote UAV Engineers?

Remote UAV Engineers are professionals who design, develop, test, and maintain unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, while working remotely. They handle tasks such as programming flight control systems, integrating sensors, troubleshooting hardware and software issues, and ensuring compliance with aviation regulations. Remote UAV Engineers often collaborate with teams virtually and may work in industries such as agriculture, surveying, defense, and delivery services.

What is the difference between Remote Uav Engineer vs Remote Drone Software Developer?

AspectRemote Uav EngineerRemote Drone Software Developer
CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, certifications in UAV systemsDegree in Computer Science or Software Engineering, coding certifications
Work EnvironmentDesign, testing, and integration of UAV hardware and systemsDeveloping and testing drone software applications and algorithms
Industry UsageAerospace, defense, surveying, agricultureSoftware companies, tech startups, UAV app development
Common Search/ComparisonYesYes

The Remote Uav Engineer focuses on UAV hardware design, integration, and system testing, often working in aerospace or defense industries. In contrast, the Remote Drone Software Developer specializes in creating software applications and algorithms for drones. Both roles require technical skills but differ mainly in hardware versus software focus, making them distinct yet related careers in the UAV industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote UAV Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote UAV Engineer, you need expertise in aeronautical engineering, robotics, and programming, typically supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with UAV control systems, simulation software (such as MATLAB or ROS), and certifications like Part 107 Remote Pilot License are commonly required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective remote communication skills help you excel in collaborative and troubleshooting scenarios. These competencies ensure the safe, efficient, and innovative development and operation of unmanned aerial systems in diverse environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Remote UAV Engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote UAV Engineers often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting technical issues without direct access to hardware, ensuring reliable communication links, and maintaining optimal performance in varying environmental conditions. Collaboration with on-site teams is essential for resolving complex problems and performing field tests. Leveraging remote diagnostic tools, detailed documentation, and regular virtual meetings can help address these challenges and ensure smooth project progression.

Extraction Technician
R.E.Y. Engineers, Inc.
๐Ÿ“ Folsom, California | Remote and Hybrid Options | Full-Time
About R.E.Y. Engineers, Inc.
R.E.Y. Engineers, Inc. is a California-based civil engineering and land surveying firm with over 30 years of experience providing planning, design, and surveying services for public and private clients across the state. Our work shapes communities through innovation, precision, and collaboration.
We're looking for an Extraction Technician to join our Survey team and contribute to impactful projects through strong technical support and data expertise.
Position Overview
R.E.Y. Engineers is seeking an Extraction Technician to support our surveying and engineering teams through the extraction of geospatial data from advanced technologies including Mobile Terrestrial LiDAR Scanning (MTLS), UAV, Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS), and bathymetric datasets.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with cutting-edge data and transforming point clouds into accurate, high-quality deliverables. Candidates with a background in surveying and strong experience in MicroStation will be especially well-suited.
This position offers a clear growth path, with increasing responsibility in data processing, modeling, and project coordination as experience develops.
What You'll Do
Data Extraction & Technical Work
  • Process and extract topographic and feature data from LiDAR and point cloud datasets (MTLS, UAV, TLS, and bathymetric).
  • Utilize MicroStation and TopoDOT to develop accurate existing conditions, surfaces, and models.
  • Interpret and translate raw geospatial data into usable engineering and survey deliverables.
  • Generate topographic maps, 3D models, and digital surfaces from extracted data.
  • Assist in integrating bathymetric and terrestrial datasets for comprehensive modeling.
  • Maintain organized file structures and adhere to client and company CAD standards.
Quality & Standards
  • Ensure all extracted data meets project specifications and accuracy requirements.
  • Follow established workflows, naming conventions, and CAD standards.
  • Review deliverables for completeness, consistency, and quality control.
  • Stay up to date with evolving technologies in LiDAR, UAV mapping, and data processing.
Collaboration & Support
  • Work closely with surveyors, engineers, and senior technicians to ensure accurate representation of field data.
  • Support multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining strong attention to deadlines.
  • Communicate proactively with team members regarding data needs, issues, or clarifications.
Professional Growth
  • Continue developing skills in point cloud processing, 3D modeling, and geospatial technologies.
  • Potential for field collection operations.
  • Gain exposure to advanced surveying technologies and workflows.
  • Grow into higher-level responsibilities including data management and project coordination.

What We're Looking For
Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate's degree or technical certification in CAD, surveying, geomatics, or related field preferred.
  • Prior experience in surveying, LiDAR, or geospatial data processing is highly preferred.
  • Experience in 3D modeling or professional gaming is a plus.
Technical Skills
  • Experience in MicroStation (required).
  • Experience with TopoDOT or other point cloud processing software preferred.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D, OpenRoads, or similar platforms is a plus.
  • Understanding of surveying principles, topographic mapping, and coordinate systems.
  • Experience working with LiDAR, UAV, TLS, or bathymetric data is highly desirable.
Key Strengths
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy.
  • Ability to interpret complex datasets and translate them into clear deliverables.
  • Adaptable to meet differing expectations based on client needs.
  • Organized, self-motivated, and able to manage multiple priorities.
  • Effective communicator and team collaborator.

Why Join R.E.Y. Engineers?
  • Work with cutting-edge technology in LiDAR and remote sensing
  • Be part of a collaborative, growing team with strong mentorship
  • Contribute to meaningful projects that support communities across California
  • Competitive salary range: $70,000 - $85,000, DOE
    • Plus bonus opportunities
  • Full benefits including: medical, vision, dental, 401k and additional insurance options.
