Energy Finance Specialist, South Korea (Remote, based in South Korea)


The Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) is seeking a motivated and experienced professional who is passionate about South Korea's energy transition and eager to apply their expertise in energy economics and finance.


The role will assess South Korea's energy market, investment flows, policy developments, and corporate and financial sector strategies, producing clear, data-driven analysis on risks, opportunities, and alignment with climate goals to inform policymakers, investors, media, and the public.


The ideal candidate must be based in South Korea and is a highly self-motivated professional with the ability to work independently in a remote setting, effectively managing multiple tasks, setting priorities, and meeting deadlines with minimal supervision. They bring relevant professional experience in South Korea, with a strong background in energy economics and energy policy, and a proven track record of covering, analysing, or working directly within the country's energy sector.


IEEFA is a global NGO/non-profit think tank that produces a significant volume of original independent public interest research and analysis on issues related to sustainable energy markets, trends, regulations, and policies. Roles and Responsibilities

  • Research and produce original, high-quality reports and commentary on South Korea's energy transition across key technologies
  • Assess South Korea's energy mix and transition pathways, evaluating short, medium, and long-term prospects across economic, financial, energy security, and decarbonization considerations
  • Monitor industry trends, policies, and market developments to inform research priorities
  • Present findings to targeted stakeholders to drive engagement and influence change
  • Build and maintain relationships with industry, government, regulators, and financial institutions to inform analysis and contribute to IEEFA's stakeholder database
  • Support the dissemination of research findings through proactive engagement with media outlets and a strong presence on social media platforms
  • Research and produce original, high-quality reports and commentary on South Korea's energy transition across key technologies
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners, including policymakers, financial institutions, and industry experts, to maximise research impact
  • Represent IEEFA at meetings, conferences, and industry events and engage stakeholders across South Korea's public and private sectors
  • Provide media insights and respond to interview requests, particularly on aspects of South Korea's energy transition


Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Four to seven years' relevant experience in the energy sector with exposure to finance and market analysis.
  • A degree in finance, economics, accounting, or engineering and/or with professional certifications (e.g. CFA) or appropriate and relevant market-oriented experience in lieu of those degrees
  • A strong understanding of the key levers driving South Korea's energy transition
  • Experience conducting quantitative analysis on energy, finance and/or economic issues; financial modelling capabilities are preferred
  • Professional proficiency in writing in English and excellent narrative-building and writing skills demonstrated through publications, reports, and commentaries
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively (verbal, written, and through presentations) and with good political judgment to media, finance, and government stakeholders, in both English and Korean.
  • High degree of technological proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, and Word and demonstrated ability to learn new software and applications
  • Must possess a commitment to IEEFA's mission to accelerate the transition to a diverse, sustainable, and profitable energy economy


Compensation and Benefits
Full-time 12-month fixed-term contract with the option of extension by mutual agreement and market-competitive remuneration. The fee is negotiated based on education, skills, experience level, and internal equity.


Travel
Some travel is required. All global team members attend IEEFA's annual conference and regional or international team retreat.


Physical Demand and Work Environment.
Must be able to work for prolonged periods at a computer. Computer work can involve repetitive motion, eyestrain, back, and neck strain.
